Do you use independent contractors in your New Jersey business? New rules from the NJDOL take effect October 1, and they add detailed guidance to how the state applies its ABC test for worker classification.

Partner Len Sprishen walks through the three-part test, a recent case that shows how differently New Jersey and federal law can treat the same worker, and what to review before then.

Conference rooms turn into assembly lines every August around here.

Boxes of notebooks come in, people from every team show up, and a few hours later we're loading cars with backpacks headed to students across New York, New Jersey, and California. This year, that was 550 kids starting the school year with everything they needed.

We've been doing this for six years now, and we've reached more than 2,200 students along the way. The supply lists change a little; the energy in the room doesn't.

Thank you to everyone who gave, packed, and delivered. Swipe through to see how it came together.

Equity compensation can help your business attract and retain key talent, but for S corporations, how it is structured matters.

Stock options, restricted stock, phantom equity, and even provisions in your company's governing documents can raise important S corporation tax considerations.
Our latest Tax Insight looks at how business owners can use equity-based compensation while protecting their S election and avoiding an accidental second class of stock.

A great internship should do more than fill a summer, it should set the direction for a career. That's the standard we hold our Summer Intern Program to at Schulman Lobel.

This year, we asked four of our 2026 interns to share what stood out most about their experience. Their answers are a good look at what makes our program different.

A significant development for NYC property owners.

A New York State judge has temporarily halted enforcement of New York City’s pied-à-terre tax amid ongoing litigation challenging the City’s implementation of the tax and its process for identifying potentially affected properties.

The City has indicated that it will appeal, meaning the ultimate implementation of the tax remains unsettled.

We’ve updated our latest insight to reflect this development and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
