W-2, 1099-NEC or neither?

Many people believe that if they did not receive a tax form, they did not earn reportable income. That is not true.

A W-2 is generally provided to an employee.

A 1099-NEC may be provided when you perform services as a nonemployee.

But if you work for yourself and get paid directly by your customers, you may not receive either form. Your earnings are still income and must be properly reported, whether you were paid by cash, check, Zelle or another method.

No 1099 does not mean no income.

According to the IRS, all income must be reported, even if you do not receive a Form 1099.

According to the latest Consumer Confidence Survey released by The Conference Board on August 25, 2026, U.S. consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in seven months.

The decline suggests that consumers are becoming more cautious about future business conditions, employment and household spending.

For small businesses, this is not a reason to panic. it is a reminder to prepare.

Monitor cash flow regularly, review unnecessary expenses, follow up on unpaid invoices, avoid overstocking slow-moving products and maintain a cash reserve whenever possible.

The earlier a business identifies a potential financial challenge, the more options it has to respond.

Important IRS update 📢

The IRS has introduced an automatic process that may provide penalty relief to eligible taxpayers with a strong history of filing and paying on time.

Not every taxpayer or penalty will qualify. Taxes and interest owed may still remain payable, and some taxpayers may continue receiving IRS notices during the transition.

If you receive an IRS notice, do not ignore it. Contact our office so we can review it carefully and explain the appropriate next steps.
