Quick check: your retirement accounts and life insurance usually go to whoever is named on the beneficiary form, not whoever is named in your will. Review those forms after any marriage, divorce, or new child.

Thinking about putting your car in your trust? It's usually not worth it. It can complicate your insurance, it means DMV paperwork for an asset that loses value, and many states offer simpler ways to pass a car on without probate. Collector and high-value cars can be the exception.

Changed jobs in the last few years? It's worth checking what happened to your old 401(k).

A few details to consider before you decide to move (rollover) the funds:

If the plan cuts the check to you instead of sending it straight to the new account, it holds back 20% for taxes. To avoid paying tax on that 20%, you'd have to deposit the full amount, including the withheld part from your own pocket, within 60 days.

A rollover isn't automatically better. Compare fees, investment choices, and any services you'd give up before deciding.

Lost track of an old account? The Department of Labor has a free "Retirement Savings Lost and Found" search that can help.

Most people pick their beneficiaries once, when they open an account, and never look again.

Checking takes about five minutes. Log in to your retirement account or call your insurer, and make sure a backup (contingent) beneficiary is named too.

One thing you can do today, in about 10 minutes: log in to your retirement accounts and life insurance and check who's listed as your beneficiary.

Those designations usually pass the account directly to whoever is named, regardless of what your will says. Marriage, divorce, or a new child can make an old form out of date without anyone noticing.

It's a small first step toward a plan you actually chose. Learn more at nuvernwealth.com.

Open enrollment is the one form most people sign without reading. We get it. It shows up during a busy season, the PDF is 40 pages, and last year's choices seem fine.

Start with your 401(k) contribution. If your employer matches and you're putting in less than the match, that's money your employer already set aside for you, and you're telling them to keep it.

Then look at the health account. If you're on a high-deductible plan, you may be able to open a Health Savings Account (HSA). Think of it as a savings account that covers medical bills, and whatever you don't spend is yours to keep, even if you change jobs. A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is more like a gift card with an expiration date. Plan carefully, because most of what's left at year end is gone, unless your plan has a small carryover or grace period.
