Your software vendor says it does not support the cloud. Is that really the end of it?

Most line-of-business applications that cannot move to a cloud version can still be hosted in the cloud. The blocker is usually attached hardware, a vendor support policy, or latency between the app and its database. For small offices, Windows 365 Business starts at $36 per user per month, and Microsoft names line-of-business applications as its use case. Microsoft's latency guidance is under 150 milliseconds round trip, which offices in the Tri-State area clear easily.

At Microsoft's list prices, Azure server migration cost runs about $340 to $560 a month for one typical Windows server, depending on commitment term and licensing, plus a one-time migration project. The Windows license alone is close to half the price of a D-series VM, and reservations do not cover it. Azure Migrate, Microsoft's own assessment tool, is free for the first 180 days per machine. Dell caps the support it will sell on a PowerEdge at seven years, and if the server runs Windows Server 2016, the last security update lands on January 12, 2027. None of that means it fails next month. It means nobody is on the hook if it does.

Three questions settle it: what runs on it, who needs it from where, and what happens the day it stops. Sometimes a new server is the right answer, and sometimes Azure is.

Could someone send email that looks like it came from your exact domain?

Victims reported $3,046,598,558 in business email compromise losses to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2025. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are three free DNS records that let receiving servers reject mail forged in your domain's name.

One Microsoft 365 detail catches people: custom domains are not DKIM-signed until the two records are added and signing is turned on. Domains you own but never send from need records too, so nobody borrows them.

IT offboarding comes down to the order of the steps. Microsoft says blocking sign-in can take up to 24 hours to take effect, so reset the password first, then sign the person out of every session, then block the account. Blocking feels final, but it is not the fastest step.

In that same first hour: collect the laptop without wiping it, retire company data from personal phones, and change every shared password they knew.

Your cyber insurance application asks if you have MFA. The harder question is whether it is enforced.

Cyber insurance MFA requirements look at two things: is MFA required on every account that touches email, remote access, and admin tools, and how strong is the method? CISA ranks MFA from strongest to weakest, and its fact sheet says phishing-resistant MFA is the gold standard. SMS codes sit at the bottom as a last resort.

On for new hires but never added to older accounts? That reads as a gap.
