If you own an S corporation, this is worth knowing.

Among tax professionals, word is circulating from recent IRS conference sessions that the agency expects to begin using AI within the next 12 to 18 months to identify S corporations where owners take distributions without running payroll. Details are still emerging, but the direction is consistent with what we have seen for years.

Why it matters: when an S corp owner actively works in the business, the IRS expects that owner to receive a reasonable salary through payroll before taking distributions. Because distributions are not subject to payroll taxes, paying yourself only through distributions is a pattern the IRS has long paid attention to.

Reasonable compensation is not a new area of focus. It has been on the IRS radar for several years, and it is something we regularly review with our S corp clients. What appears to be changing is the scale. Automated review could make it easier to spot returns that show distributions with little or no wages.

A few questions worth asking now:
Are you running payroll for yourself?
Is your salary in line with what someone in your role would typically earn?
Is the way you set your compensation documented?

There is no single formula for reasonable compensation, and the right answer depends on your role, your industry, and your business. If you would like help reviewing your setup, we are glad to talk it through. 727.312.6999

Remember extending your taxes back in the spring and deciding to deal with them later? Later is officially here.

October 15 is the final deadline to file an extended individual return, and it tends to arrive faster than expected. If you filed an extension with us, now is the time to wrap up the last few steps so we can get your return filed with room to spare.

Three things move it across the finish line:

→ Upload any tax documents still outstanding
→ Reply to any open questions waiting in your inbox from us
→ Sign your e-file authorization once your return is ready

Getting these in early gives us time to review everything properly, rather than racing the deadline.

If you have questions about your extended return or what is still needed, we can help. 727.312.6999

If you filed a joint return, expected a solid refund, and then watched part of it go toward a debt that was not yours, "injured spouse" is probably what your search results turned up.

Here is what that means. When a joint refund is applied to certain debts that belong to only one spouse, the other spouse may be able to recover their share. Those debts typically include things like past-due child support or certain federal or state tax debt.

Injured spouse relief is the process for getting back your portion of the refund. If part of the refund traces to your income, your withholding, your estimated payments, or refundable credits you qualify for, you may be able to request that share using Form 8379.

It is worth knowing this exists, because many people assume the whole refund is simply gone. Often, part of it can be recovered.

If you think this situation applies to you, we can help you sort out your options. 727.312.6999

They live in your house, eat all the Costco snacks, and use your Netflix password. That makes them a dependent, right?

Maybe. Claiming a dependent is not automatic, and the IRS looks at several specific factors to decide who qualifies:

→ What is your relationship to them?
→ How many nights did they live in your home during the year?
→ Are they a full-time student, and what is their age?
→ Did they provide more than half of their own support?
→ Could anyone else claim them?

Each of these can change the answer, which is why two households can look similar and still get different results.

Divorce and shared custody add another layer, especially when child-related tax benefits are split between the parents. In those cases, the details of who claims what really matter.

If you are not sure whether someone qualifies as your dependent, we can help. 727.312.6999
