Falling behind on franchise bookkeeping doesn’t just create extra work at tax time. It can leave you making decisions using financial information that no longer reflects what’s happening in your business.

In this video, wr explain why current, accurate books matter for multi-unit franchise owners and how delayed bookkeeping can make it harder to understand location performance, manage cash flow, track expenses, and plan ahead.

Revenue. Profit. Cash flow.

You need all three.

I’ve seen franchise businesses generating impressive sales while the owner is still wondering where all the money went.

That’s because high revenue doesn’t automatically mean high profit, and profit on paper doesn’t automatically mean cash in the bank.

As a franchise owner, you need to understand how all three work together.

Sales get the attention. Profit tells you whether the business model is working. Cash flow helps determine whether you can actually pay the bills, reinvest, service debt, and grow.

So when someone tells you a franchise does $1 million in annual sales, don’t stop there.

Ask what’s left after the combo. 😉

📗 I dig into the numbers and lessons behind successful franchise ownership in Franchisee Fortune.

You wouldn’t serve fries that have been sitting around for weeks.

But plenty of franchise owners are making decisions today using financial information that’s 60 or even 90 days behind.

When your bookkeeping falls behind, you’re looking at where the business was, not where it is now.

That makes it harder to spot rising costs, compare location performance, manage cash flow, or identify a problem before it gets bigger.

Fresh fries matter. Fresh numbers matter more. 😉

We break down what delayed bookkeeping can really cost multi-unit franchise operators in our latest article.

You wouldn’t order without reading the menu. So why buy a franchise without reading the numbers? 🍔

You probably wouldn’t walk into a restaurant, ignore the menu, and confidently say, “Yep, I’ll take that.”

But people make much bigger financial decisions with surprisingly little information.

When you’re considering a franchise, recognizing the brand and liking the concept is only the beginning.

You need to understand the numbers behind the opportunity.

What are the royalties? What does labor typically look like? What are the expected food or product costs? How much debt will you carry? What do the unit economics tell you? And, after everything is paid, what could realistically be left for you?

The FDD might not be as exciting as the menu.

But when you’re investing your own money, read it before you order. 😉

Coffee comes with a warning. Why doesn’t a franchise? ☕⚠️

Apparently, we need to be warned that hot coffee is hot.

But you can invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into a franchise without a label reminding you of something equally important:

A proven brand does not guarantee a profitable business.

I’m a big believer in franchising. I’ve owned franchises myself and spent years advising franchise owners as a CPA.

But before you buy, you need to understand what you’re actually buying.

The fees. The margins. The labor model. The location economics. The financing. The cash flow. And ultimately, what needs to happen for you to make money.

That’s one of the reasons I wrote Franchisee Fortune. Not to warn people away from franchising, but to help them go into it with their eyes open.

Maybe franchises just need a better caution label. 😉

A royalty payment coded incorrectly. Expenses sitting in the wrong location. Accounts that haven’t been reconciled. Financial reports that are already out of date.

One mistake might not seem like much.

But across multiple locations and several months, small bookkeeping problems can create a much bigger cleanup job when tax season arrives.

In this video, we walk you through the 7 bookkeeping mistakes franchise owners should catch before tax season.

One franchise is a business. What are you building beyond it?

Buying a franchise gives you a system, a brand, and a place to start.

But those things alone don’t create financial freedom.

The real work is learning how to turn that opportunity into a business that produces profit without demanding every hour of your time.

I learned that firsthand as a franchise owner, and later from working with hundreds of franchise businesses as a CPA.

That experience became Franchisee Fortune, a practical guide to thinking beyond simply owning a franchise and building toward something bigger: time, profit, and freedom.

If expenses from Location A are sitting in Location B’s books, your consolidated numbers might still look reasonable.

Your unit-level performance won’t.

For multi-unit franchise owners, accurate location tracking matters when you’re comparing profitability, managing costs, making staffing decisions, or considering your next location.

Franchise bookkeeping problems rarely appear overnight.

A misclassified royalty payment here. An unreconciled account there. Expenses coded to the wrong location.

Individually, they may seem small. But across multiple locations and several months, those errors can distort the financial picture you’re using to run your business.

We break down 7 bookkeeping mistakes franchise owners should watch for before tax season.

Running a franchise can sometimes feel like you’re chasing your tail.

More sales. More locations. More employees. More problems to solve.

But growth doesn’t automatically create a better business.

After owning Dunkin’ franchises myself and spending years advising franchise owners as a CPA, I’ve seen what separates businesses that simply stay busy from those that actually build time, profit, and freedom for their owners.

That’s why I wrote Franchisee Fortune.

No complicated theory. Just practical lessons from someone who has sat on both sides of the table.

And apparently, it’s a pretty good read. 🐾📗
