It takes a team. 💙

When you work with Smith’s Tax Solutions, there may be one person you talk to most often, but there’s usually more happening behind the scenes than you see.

Questions get discussed. Documents get reviewed. Research gets done. Team members step in to help each other. And sometimes more than one set of eyes is involved in getting something across the finish line.

That's part of the culture we've worked hard to build.

We don't want our team thinking, “That's not my client.”

We want them thinking, “How can I help?”

Because at the end of the day, they're all our clients.

✈️ We're Headed Back to the Classroom!

Tomorrow, more than half of the Smith's Tax Solutions team will be heading to a multi-day tax conference.

Because tax laws, IRS procedures, and best practices are constantly changing. We believe our clients deserve a team that is committed to staying current—not just during tax season, but year-round.

We believe great tax professionals never stop learning. Every year, we invest time in continuing education so we can provide the most accurate, up-to-date guidance possible.

We can't wait to bring what we learn back to our clients, and we'll share a few highlights along the way!

👻 Would your tax preparer sign your tax return?

It may sound like a strange question, but it's an important one.

The IRS warns taxpayers to avoid "ghost preparers"—people who prepare tax returns but refuse to sign them or include their IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).

Why does it matter?

Because you're still legally responsible for everything on your tax return, even if someone else prepared it.

Before your return is filed, make sure:

✅ Your preparer signs the return.
✅ Their PTIN is included.
✅ You review the completed return before signing.
✅ You never sign a blank or incomplete return.

Choosing a reputable tax professional helps protect you from costly mistakes and potential fraud.

Did you miss the September estimated tax payment deadline?

The third-quarter estimated tax payment was due September 15.

If you were required to make an estimated payment and missed the deadline, don't make the mistake of thinking, “I'll just catch up with the next one.”

Waiting longer can mean additional underpayment penalties.

💡 What should you do?

If you know what you were supposed to pay, consider making the payment as soon as possible. If you're not sure how much you should be paying, now is a good time to review your income and estimated tax situation.

Estimated payments aren't just about avoiding a surprise tax bill. They're about paying enough throughout the year to stay on track.

And with one estimated tax payment remaining for the 2026 tax year, there's still time to make adjustments.

True or False?
❤️ Every purchase you make from a charity is tax-deductible.

🤔 Answer: False.

Buying something from a charity doesn't automatically make the purchase tax-deductible.

If you receive an item in return for your payment, you generally can't deduct the portion equal to the item's value. Only an amount paid above the fair market value may qualify as a charitable contribution.

For example, if you buy an item worth $100 for $100, there's generally no charitable deduction.

Tax rules can be more complicated than they seem. When in doubt, ask before you claim the deduction.

“We very much appreciate the professionalism and confidence when dealing with very sensitive issues. They also offer a personalized easy to contact with questions/concerns that we had over our battles with the IRS. They were definitely worth the phone call, and with all of their help we can finally relax and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Much thanks.”

🚨 Tax mistake or tax evasion? There’s a BIG difference.

People make mistakes on tax returns. A number gets entered incorrectly. Income gets left off accidentally. Records aren't perfect.

That's not the same thing as intentionally trying to avoid tax.

The difference often comes down to intent.

A mistake might mean additional tax, penalties, and interest.

But deliberately hiding income, creating fake expenses, keeping two sets of books, or falsifying records can turn a tax problem into something much more serious.

For business owners, a few red flags include:

⚠️ Sales that aren't reported
⚠️ Expenses that don't actually exist
⚠️ Tax returns that don't match the books
⚠️ Improper or missing records
⚠️ Payroll taxes that are withheld but aren't paid

Good bookkeeping isn't just about knowing whether your business made money.

Good records can also help show the difference between an honest mistake and something intentional.

And that's a pretty important difference.

💰 Be cautious of "everyone qualifies" tax credits.

If you've seen posts claiming there's a special "Self-Employment Tax Credit" that almost anyone can claim...
..be skeptical.

The IRS continues to warn taxpayers about promoters encouraging people to claim credits they don't actually qualify for.

Here's the reality:

✔️ Tax credits have specific eligibility requirements.
✔️ Not everyone qualifies.
✔️ The IRS is carefully reviewing these claims.

Filing for a credit you aren't entitled to could lead to:

📬 IRS notices
💵 Penalties
🔍 Audits
⏳ Delayed refunds

Before claiming a tax credit you heard about online, make sure it actually applies to your situation.

Good tax advice is based on the law—not viral videos.
