Every March, we have the same conversation.

A business owner slides a stack of paperwork across the table and asks, "Is there anything we can do to lower this?"

Most years, we have to give the honest answer: not much. Not anymore.

Here's the pattern we've seen over and over. The owners who pay the least tax aren't the ones with the cleverest accountant in April. They're the ones who talked to their accountant in October.

Prep tells you what you owe. Planning changes what you owe.

Prep is a rearview mirror. It's required, it matters, and getting it wrong is expensive. But by the time you're filing, the year is closed. The equipment purchase, the owner pay adjustment, the retirement plan — those decisions locked on December 31.

The owners who get this right have three things in common:

1. They see a projection before year end, not a surprise after it.
2. They make one or two deliberate moves in Q4 instead of zero.
3. They have an accountant who calls them, not the other way around.
