LET ME TELL YOU WHY I ASK SO MANY QUESTIONS BEFORE PREPARING A TAX RETURN.

Because I'm not putting my business, my credentials, or YOUR tax return at risk just to produce a refund number somebody wants to see.

If you tell me you're self-employed, I'm going to ask about your income and expenses.

If you claim a dependent, I'm going to ask questions about eligibility.

If you have education expenses, I'm going to review the requirements.

And if something doesn't add up, we're going to address it BEFORE filing.

**A PROFESSIONAL TAX PREPARER SHOULD BE WILLING TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO HEAR, NOT JUST WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR.**

That's the standard I'm committed to at Hometown Tax Service.

BUSINESS OWNERS, LET'S TALK ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE YOU PAID THIS YEAR! πŸ‘€

Did you pay independent contractors for services in your business?

If so, you may have information-reporting responsibilities.

Depending on the payments, amounts, payee classification, and applicable rules, you may need to issue Form 1099-NEC or another information return.

And here's the part I want you to understand:

**YOU SHOULD NOT WAIT UNTIL JANUARY TO FIND OUT YOU NEVER COLLECTED THE CONTRACTOR'S TAX INFORMATION.**

A properly completed Form W-9 can help you gather the information needed to determine reporting obligations.

Also, paying someone as a contractor doesn't automatically make them an independent contractor under the law.

**Get your paperwork and worker classifications right BEFORE year-end.**

β€œMY BABY DADDY SAID I COULD CLAIM THE CHILD THIS YEAR.”

OKAY…BUT WHAT DO THE TAX RULES SAY? πŸ‘€

Let's clear something up.

An agreement between parents doesn't automatically override federal tax law.

Who the child lived with, the child's relationship to each taxpayer, support rules, and other requirements can affect who may claim certain tax benefits.

And even when the custodial parent properly releases the claim to certain benefits using Form 8332, that does NOT automatically transfer eligibility for Head of Household, Earned Income Tax Credit, or dependent care benefits.

Those benefits have their OWN requirements.

**YOU CANNOT JUST TRADE ALL CHILD-RELATED TAX BENEFITS BACK AND FORTH BECAUSE YOU AGREED TO IT.**

This is why we ask questions about residency, custody, and documentation.

YOU HAVE A BUSINESS ACCOUNT, AN LLC, AND AN EIN.

SO YOU THINK THE IRS AUTOMATICALLY CONSIDERS EVERY EXPENSE A BUSINESS DEDUCTION? πŸ‘€

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

An LLC doesn't turn personal spending into a business expense.

Putting your groceries on the business debit card doesn't automatically make them deductible.

And paying for something through your business account doesn't prove it was an ordinary and necessary business expense.

For federal income tax purposes, the nature and purpose of the expense matter.

Some expenses may be deductible.

Some may need to be capitalized.

Some may be partly personal.

And some aren't deductible at all.

**Your bank account doesn't determine the tax treatment. The facts and tax law do.**

Business owners, let's get those records organized BEFORE tax season.

🚨 THE IRS SENT YOU A BILL. SO YOU'RE JUST GOING TO IGNORE IT?

BABY, THAT'S NOT A STRATEGY! 😩

Here's what taxpayers need to understand.

An IRS balance due notice doesn't automatically mean the IRS made a mistake.

But it ALSO doesn't mean you should pay an amount without understanding what the notice says.

You need to determine:

πŸ’œ Which tax year is involved?

πŸ’› What tax, penalties, and interest are being assessed?

πŸ’œ Was a payment or credit overlooked?

πŸ’› Is there a deadline to respond or dispute something?

πŸ’œ If the amount is correct, what payment options might be available?

And PLEASE don't throw the notice away because you're afraid to open it.

**The IRS isn't going to forget about a balance simply because you stop checking your mail.**
