Waiting for your W-2 and 1099s is fine for filing. It is late for many planning conversations.

Tax forms are designed to report what already happened.

By the time they arrive, the salary was earned, the bonus was paid, the RSUs vested and the stock may already have been sold.

For a high-income technology professional, the better planning window is while those events are still unfolding.

Use October and November to review what has happened so far and what is still expected before December 31.

Then filing season becomes a reporting process - not the first time you are seeing the year's full tax picture.

Some tax questions are really timing questions.

Should you make an estimated payment? Adjust withholding? Sell shares now or later? Accelerate or delay a financial decision?

The right answer depends on your specific facts, and taxes should not be the only consideration.

But timing matters because many decisions only affect the year in which they happen.

That is why proactive planning belongs before year-end, not only during filing season.

A good review gives you a clearer view of the tradeoffs so you can make the decision that fits your broader financial goals.

A five-minute year-end tax checklist for tech professionals:

1. Estimate your full-year salary and bonuses.
2. Add RSUs that have vested and any remaining scheduled vests.
3. Note company stock or other investments you sold.
4. Add consulting or freelance income.
5. Review taxes already withheld or paid.

You do not need a perfect forecast to get value from this.

The point is to stop looking at each paystub or brokerage alert separately and start seeing one financial picture.

If any number changed materially this year, make a note to discuss it before year-end.

October is a better time to ask "Where do I stand?" than next April.

By now, most of 2026 is already visible.

You know your year-to-date salary. Many bonuses have been paid. Several RSU vests may already be complete. You may know whether you changed jobs, sold stock or earned side income.

That makes October a practical time for a tax checkup.

A year-end review can compare expected total income with withholding and estimated payments, then identify questions that deserve attention before December ends.

The goal is not to predict every dollar perfectly. It is to replace uncertainty with a clearer plan.

Your 2026 income is almost complete. Your planning window is getting shorter.

If this year included a promotion, bonus, RSU vests, stock sales, a new employer or side consulting income, now is a useful time to understand how those pieces fit together.

You do not need to wait until filing season to find out where you stand.

A proactive year-end review can help you organize the numbers, evaluate your current withholding and payments, and identify planning questions to address before the year closes.

Your career and compensation may have changed a lot this year. Your tax strategy should reflect the financial life you have now.

Better tax planning is not only about paying less. It is about making the next dollar more intentional.

If proactive planning creates additional after-tax cash, the next question matters: what is that money for?

For one professional, it may support an emergency reserve. For another, it could support retirement goals, debt reduction, education funding, investing or a future home purchase.

Taxes should not be planned in a vacuum.

The most useful strategy connects your tax decisions to the life you are actually building.

Start with the goal, then evaluate which financial and tax choices support it.

Quick check: what changed in your financial life since January?

Did your salary increase? Did you receive a larger bonus? Did more RSUs vest than expected? Did you switch employers, sell company stock or take on consulting work?

If the answer to any of those is yes, your 2026 tax picture may not look like 2025.

That does not automatically mean you have a problem. It means your assumptions may need an update.

Take ten minutes this week and list the major income changes from the year. That simple exercise is a good starting point for a more proactive tax conversation.
