Do you know who just took the helm of the Fed?

Kevin Warsh is the new Federal Reserve Chair, though most people have never heard his name. Unlike his predecessors, he doesn't have an academic background. He spent the last decade and a half at a private investment firm, not in a university lecture hall.

He's already signaling a different approach, promising shorter statements and more transparency in how the Fed communicates.

That matters more than it might seem. The Fed Chair's decisions ripple through the economy, affecting everything from mortgage rates to car loans to credit cards.

Lately, we've heard one question more than any other: What does this mean for me? Honestly, it depends on your situation. But knowing who's steering the ship is where smart financial decisions start.

What's your biggest question about this shift at the Fed?

Third-party payment apps report your gross transfers to the IRS.

Say you originally bought a couch for $1,200 and later sold it through Cash App for $400.

If you keep the record showing what you originally paid, you can prove that $400 transfer wasnโ€™t a $400 gain. You sold the couch at a loss.

Don't rely only on PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or whichever payment platform you're using to track things for you.

Keep the records that show what those payments actually represent.

Getting paid via Venmo or PayPal doesn't automatically make your side income a business. The IRS looks at how you operate and whether your primary goal is making a profit.

If you keep separate books, set aside regular work hours, and take on ongoing gigs like freelancing or tutoring, you're operating as a business.

If you're just making money here and there from something you do for fun, like streaming or selling a few crafts, that's usually hobby income. You aren't really trying to make a living off it.

This distinction completely changes your tax setup. Business owners report their earnings on Schedule C and can deduct ordinary expenses to lower what they owe. If your side income is more of a hobby, you report the earnings on Schedule 1 as other income, but you can't write off any expenses against it.

Gen Xers fret over the future of Social Security. "I will likely be working in retirement." 09/03/2026

For many Gen Xers, retirement is starting to feel less like a distant milestone and more like a looming financial reality.

The oldest members of the generation will turn 62 next year, the earliest age to claim Social Security. At the same time, many are approaching retirement with limited savings and fewer pensions than previous generations had.

The median Gen X retirement savings balance is about $107,000, while members of the generation estimate theyโ€™ll need roughly $700,000 for retirement. Social Security may also become an increasingly important source of income, with 41% of workers over 55 saying they expect it to be their primary source in retirement.

That gap is prompting some Gen Xers to rethink when theyโ€™ll stop working, how much they may need to save, and what retirement could realistically look like.

If retirement is getting closer, this may be a good time to review your savings, expected Social Security benefits, and other sources of retirement income.

If youโ€™re operating as a sole proprietor, thereโ€™s no legal separation between you and your business.

So if your business canโ€™t pay a creditor or gets hit with a lawsuit, your personal savings, home, or vehicles could be exposed too.

As your business grows, make sure the way you operate reflects that growth.

That may mean forming an LLC or corporation, then moving your business banking, contracts, insurance policies, vendor accounts, and payment processors into the companyโ€™s legal name.

The goal is to create a clearer line between what belongs to you personally and what belongs to the business.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Roughly 56 percent of IPOs bought at the offer price lost money after 3 years.

That's not the headline you see on day one.

You see the first-day pop. The company goes public, and its stock has averaged a 19 percent gain since 1980. Feels like a moment you should catch.

Here's what actually happens:

1๏ธโƒฃ Institutional investors get the offering price before trading opens.

2๏ธโƒฃ You buy at market open, after the move.

Then the real story starts.

๐Ÿ”Ž This gap is based on research led by Professor Jay R. Ritter, who authored a 2026 report on IPO performance for the University of Florida. His analysis of 9,300 U.S. IPOs is one of the most comprehensive databases available.

Chasing IPOs can provide a thrill, but there are pros and cons.

A sound portfolio should reflect an investor's goals, risk, and time horizon. The risks of an IPO are not for everyone. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿ“‹ Past performance does not guarantee future results. The return and principal value of IPOs and other stocks will fluctuate as market conditions change. And shares, when sold, may be worth more or less than their original cost.

Fedโ€™s preferred inflation gauge shows core prices rose 3.3% annually in July 09/01/2026

Inflation is still running above the Federal Reserveโ€™s 2% target.

The Fedโ€™s preferred inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures price index, rose 0.2% in July and 3.7% from a year earlier. Core PCE, which strips out food and energy prices, increased 3.3% annually.

The report also showed personal income rose 0.4% while spending increased 0.2%.

For consumers, that means price pressures havenโ€™t disappeared, even as some categories, including gasoline and other energy-related goods, moved lower during the month.

With inflation still elevated, the latest numbers may remain an important part of the Fedโ€™s upcoming interest-rate discussions.

Fedโ€™s preferred inflation gauge shows core prices rose 3.3% annually in July The personal consumption expenditures price index was expected to rise 0.1% monthly and 3.6% on a 12-month basis, according to economists surveyed by Dow Jones.

Draw cash strategically across three accounts to keep your tax bill as low as possible.
โ€ข Pull just enough from your Traditional IRA or 401(k) to fill up the lowest tax brackets (10% or 12%).
โ€ข Cover remaining living expenses with taxable savings or brokerage cash so you don't push yourself into a higher bracket.
โ€ข Use tax-free Roth IRA dollars for big one-off expenses with zero tax impact.

Balancing your withdrawals this way keeps your overall tax rate low and can even unlock 0% capital gains rates.
