Do you ever wonder how to use your financial statements effectively for your business? Have you ever thought, I know how much money I have in the bank; isn't that enough?
Well, financial statements provide business owners and leaders with reliable information to understand where the business stands, identify potential problems, and make informed decisions about the future.
There are three primary financial statements-Balance Sheet, Income Statement (Profit & Loss Statement), and Cash Flow Statement-each providing a different perspective on the financial health of your business.
Effectively using your statements allows you to measure profitability, manage cash flow, identify trends and problems early, improve budgeting and forecasting, and strengthen access to financing.
Financial statements should not simply be reports that are generated and filed away. Their greatest value comes from using them as management tools.

I had the awesome pleasure of speaking this spring at She Stands Tall Forward, Inc. Women's Entrepreneurship Week about being financially fearless in business.
Being financially fearless doesn’t mean there won’t be uncertainty. It means you operate with intentionality, preparation, and confidence because you have strong financial systems in place.
Financially fearless business owners know their numbers, plan ahead, price for sustainability, invest in growth, and make strategic decisions instead of simply operating in survival mode.
The goal isn’t just to work harder—it’s to build a business that is financially strong and sustainable.
Are you financially fearless in your business?

Running a business or nonprofit organization without knowing your key financial indicators is like driving without a dashboard. You may be moving, but you don't know how well you're performing or where potential problems are developing.
Your financial statements tell a story, but your key financial indicators help you understand what that story means. They give you the information you need to make sound decisions, improve cash flow, monitor profitability, strengthen sustainability, and plan confidently for the future.
Some of the key numbers you should know include:
• Cash on hand
• Profit margin (or operating surplus for nonprofits)
• Accounts receivable
• Accounts payable
• Budget-to-actual performance
• Current ratio
• Program or project profitability
• Fundraising or revenue trends
When you understand your numbers, you stop reacting to financial challenges and start leading with confidence.
At McMurtry Financial Services, LLC, we help business owners and nonprofit leaders build strong financial systems that provide meaningful information—not just reports. Because when you know your numbers, you can make better decisions that support long-term growth and sustainability.

The July 2026 edition of the McMurtry Financial Matters newsletter was released with some really great information. Check out a sample article on how automation can strengthen your financial management:
When many people hear the word automation, they think of replacing people. In reality, automation is about eliminating repetitive tasks, so your team can focus on work that requires critical thinking, strategy, and relationship building.
What Can You Automate?
Today's accounting software and financial tools allow organizations to automate many routine financial processes, including:
: Recurring customer invoices
: Bill payment reminders and approvals
: Bank and credit card transaction downloads
: Expense categorization
: Payroll processing
: Financial reporting
: Budget tracking
: Cash flow monitoring
: Grant and fund tracking for nonprofit organizations
These automations reduce manual data entry, minimize errors, and provide more timely financial information.

One of the biggest mistakes we see business owners make is waiting until tax season to find out what they owe. By then, your options to reduce your tax liability are VERY limited.
A mid-year meeting with your accountant or tax preparer allows you to make informed decisions while you are ahead of the game.
Here are a few things to prepare before your meeting:
✅ Make sure your bookkeeping is current and accurate.
✅ Bring your year-to-date Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet.
✅ Compare your current income to last year. Are you earning more or less than expected?
✅ Discuss any major purchases, equipment, or vehicles you plan to buy before year-end.
✅ Review estimated tax payments to make sure you're not underpaying.
✅ Talk through retirement contributions and other tax-saving strategies.
✅ If you have employees or contractors, review payroll and 1099 compliance.
✅ Update your accountant on any significant business changes, such as new revenue streams, financing, or expansion plans.
A proactive conversation today can save you thousands tomorrow. Don't wait for tax season to discover an expensive surprise. Schedule your mid-year review now and finish the year with confidence.
