It's been a while since I posted. Life has been busy, which can be a good, in moderation. Speaking of busy, it's almost the end of tax season, so I thought this might be a good time to clarify the services we offer, and the ones we don't.

We frequently get requests for income tax filing, and although I am an EA, and at one time did tax work, we no longer do, and don't intend to in the foreseeable future. Why not?

Check out our page for more details.

We've got plenty of work without getting involved in income tax. Once the year end is ready, we happily turn that part over to the tax experts.

It's been a while since I posted. Life has been busy, which can be a good, in moderation. Speaking of busy, it's almost the end of tax season, so I thought this might be a good time to clarify the services we offer, and the ones we don't.

We are not full service accountants - we don't offer income tax preparation.

We frequently get requests for income tax filing, and although I am an EA, and at one time did tax work, we no longer do, and don't intend to in the foreseeable future. Why not?

A couple of reasons:

Frankly, I hate tax work. Accounting is logical - taxes are not. Taxes are a necessary evil but they just aren't my jam. I take my hat off to those who choose to.

Income tax deadlines interfere too much with our year round client bookkeeping and accounting. Tax work was spreading us too thin during our already busiest season, and kept us from focusing properly on the clients we work with all year long.

Then there is the scare factor. Hackers have decided that tax accountants are juicy targets for identity theft. Doing a little tax work on the side for the convenience of my smaller clients just didn't make financial sense - the yearly education, the software, the insurance, the security required - it was too costly to do on a small scale, and I really prefer bookkeeping anyway.

So, what kind of tax work do we do?

We prep and file a lot of annual 1099 NEC and MISC filings, though hopefully fewer this coming year, with the new higher thresholds.

Occasionally we assist with payroll filings, although most of that happens through the payroll service providers we use.

We do a lot of sales tax filings - monthly, quarterly, annual. Right now we assist clients filing in half dozen states, including CT, NY, and VA.

Some states like CT and NY have property tax filings on a local level. We provide the calculations.

We've got plenty of work without getting involved in income tax. Once the year end is ready, we happily turn that part over to the tax experts.

So be extra nice to the tax preparers out there who are in the final countdown. In a few weeks they'll get to join the rest of us living in 2026, for at least a few more months. And then the cycle starts again!

Are you neglecting your paperwork? Are your business books gathering cobwebs?

It's easy to get so wrapped up with "real work" that you forget to take care of your business. Keeping your books neat and timely should be a priority all year, not just at tax time.

Need some pointers to get started? Check out our website! We've got a great collection of articles on our blog page that will get you inspired to get back to your books.

An inspiring story of a trades gal and entrepreneur.

On this day in Arlington history, January 4, 1930: Lillian Baumbach was born. Raised in Arlington, she became the first woman Master Plumber in the US.

Lillian graduated from Washington-Lee (now Liberty) High School in 1947. She learned the trade working summers in her father's Arlington plumbing business which was started in 1928 and she tagged along with her father on service calls. She made her father’s family plumbing business Baumbach Plumbers of Arlington nationally known.

The idea of a diminutive figure wielding a large, cast-iron pipe wrench in the labor-intensive world of plumbing was treated as a novelty. Women plumbers were so unusual at the time that the Washington Evening Star dubbed her ``the pretty plumber." The Arlington native attracted national attention that led to newspaper (including a cartoon from the Boston Herald) and magazine articles and radio and television appearances including “What’s My Line.” She was said to have “scorned dolls for monkey wrenches when she was 6 years old. By the time she was 12 she had become a regular plumber’s helper on jobs with her dad. Her story and picture were carried by wire services, and soon, she received hundreds of letters from around the world. The correspondences, some simply addressed only to "Pretty Plumber," contained marriage proposals and queries on technical plumbing problems. A US Army infantry company stationed in Korea during the Korean War elected her as its pinup girl. She sent them the photo (below) of herself holding a wrench over her shoulder.

She married George W. “Bill” Jacobs and they had two daughters. She became President of her father’s plumbing business until her retirement in 1989 when she moved to North Carolina. She died in 2000.

Lillian Baumbach Jacobs, an Arlingtonian, broke new ground for women by opening up a traditional man’s field. Her story was used for years by the industry to recruit new plumbers.
