Let’s plant abundance, not scarcity. If we think of wealth only in monetary terms, we miss the wholeness of wealth.

Beauty and abundance surround us, and we can actively participate in expanding both.

In my neighborhood, we share native Florida seeds and plants. This may seem like a simple act, but the ripple effect is stunning.

We are creating community and green corridors. One biodiverse garden is wonderful. Start connecting these gardens and the benefits become exponentially better.

Do you want to witness wonder daily and work with your community to help the natural world not only survive but thrive?

I invite you to join this movement we are creating: garden by garden, we can change the world.

Yes, monetary wealth is important, but if that is how you exclusively define wealth and do not include nature, you are missing out on magic.

Let’s plant abundance, not scarcity. 🌱

📌 If you would like to purchase native Florida plants at a delightful nursery, visit Flora of Miami located at 1757 NW 21st Street, Miami, Florida.

I practice gratitude every day. It helps bring me peace and raises my vibration.

I don’t practice gratitude to get something, yet that is often how it works. Gratitude is a state of being. You feel it in your own body, mind, and heart, and other people feel it too.

The flight was delayed, and we landed at night. I took the bus to the rental car agency, and the line was long. The customer service personnel worked diligently, but the long line meant it was taking time.

The man in front of me became increasingly agitated. By the time it was his turn, he was ready to explode and immediately started yelling at the employee assisting him.

When it was my turn, I spoke kindly to the employee and expressed that the way that man had treated her was unfair. I thanked her for her service and told her that I knew she was doing her best.

Watch my MoneyMaestra video to see how the customer service representative responded to my gratitude and kindness.

I acted because it was the right thing to do, but that rental car agency employee made my night and my vacation with her response.

Practice gratitude and be kind — this world deeply needs it.

Are you compatible with your partner when it comes to money?

Money appears in your relationship every day in some way. Money-related issues are also a leading cause of divorce.

Yet, money is often not openly discussed in a wholehearted, healthy way within relationships.

Are there Financial Red Flags in your relationship that you have missed or are ignoring?

Don’t let money divide your relationship. Talk about money and address any Financial Red Flags.

Women have historically lagged in achieving financial security and freedom.

It is time to change that statistic. It begins with changing your money story and your beliefs about money.

Perhaps you were never taught about money. Maybe you grew up in a household with money secrecy, or where one parent (usually the male figure, as in my family) controlled the money. Maybe you grew up around financial chaos.

Yes, of course your life experience affects your money story and your financial beliefs. The good news is that the story and the beliefs can change if they are not serving you.

You are the person in control of making the change. That seems simple, but given the staggering amount of credit card debt and deep financial worries many people have, making this change can also seem elusive.

To have a brighter, more secure financial present and future, you must confront your fear and uncertainty and take steps that move you forward financially.

Does it take courage? Sure it does, but I did it and I know you can too.

Overspending isn’t abundance. That seems simple. Yet, in practice, this basic money principle is often not followed.

I was speaking to someone recently who described an expensive trip she wanted to take, which sounded lovely and exciting—but then we began to speak about finances…

There was no money set aside for this trip, nor was there any likely incoming money to cover it. So, the trip would have been on credit, with no way to pay for it.

My advice was: don’t take the trip. If your plan is to create freedom in your life and reduce money stress, this is not the way to do it.

Sure, the vacation would have been beautiful and maybe while enjoying the trip, you could temporarily “forget” that the trip was going to put you further in debt. However, upon your return, reality would be waiting.

The temporary high from the trip would shortly result in a low that would increase your money stress and reduce your freedom.

If you want the trip, then save for the trip.

Or debt cycles repeat, you pay high interest rates on credit cards, and you just can’t seem to get ahead financially.

Moving forward responsibly with money will ultimately create freedom and put you on solid financial ground. This feels better than any temporary high you get from a vacation or material item you can’t afford.

Overspending isn’t abundance. It actually creates scarcity in your life.

My partner and I returned last night from a 6-week trip that included two continents and four countries.

We started our trip visiting a dear friend in Bulgaria, then went on a road trip to Greece.

Next was a stop in Mumbai, India, then onto Chennai, India, where we lived with my partner’s family for 5 weeks.

We broke up our return flight to Miami with an overnight stay in London.

Traveling teaches you many lessons about life and money.

This photo shows me cleaning out my office at the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General on April 27, 2017. The next day was my final day as a Senior Special Agent.

I was saying goodbye to my federal law enforcement career and hello to the next chapter. I met both the age and time-in-service requirements for retirement.

However, financial security is what truly allowed me to retire two weeks after I became eligible. I had been planning for this moment since I was 23 years old.

The spoiler alert is that creating financial freedom in my life never felt like a burden. It felt like a great adventure that I was creating on my terms.

As soon as I began my career with the federal government, on the civil side with the Internal Revenue Service, I began contributing to my Thrift Savings Plan (the government equivalent of a 401K) as early as I was allowed. I never looked back; as my salary increased, I increased my contribution.

Key component to success: I had my TSP contribution automatically withdrawn from my paycheck, before I ever saw the money. I did not miss the extra pay because I never knew what it felt like to have it.

This is one of the most frequent mistakes I see when people try to build wealth: they do not automate their investments. Good intentions are nice, but they require follow-through. Automate and watch your money grow. That’s powerful.

The time since I retired has flown by and this chapter of my life has been incredible. I have been living the life of my dreams and guess what? The compound interest on my investments that allowed me to retire at 50 has grown exponentially.

Investing in your retirement as early as possible allows you to retire young and create your next chapter.

What did an African Violet teach me about money?

I was not tending to the plant properly: The pot was too small, there was not enough soil, and sometimes I forgot to water it.

I looked at it on the kitchen windowsill one day and saw it leaning into the sun. I realized it was pleading for a change in its environment.

I found a pretty, larger ceramic pot, placed new, nutrient-rich soil in it, watered it, and placed the plant back on the windowsill. Within a week, it was blooming and rapidly increasing in size.

It just needed space and the right ingredients to grow! It needed a new environment.

Now, I ask you: If your current financial situation is not where you want it to be, what is your money environment?

Do you place yourself in an environment that lets you learn and expand, or one that holds you back?

When it comes to money: Go Where You Grow.

As parents, are you teaching your kids about money and preparing them to be financially independent?

This is an important question to ask yourselves well before your children graduate from high school. Too often, children leave for college or attempt to strike out on their own with little to no idea how money works.

This is a disservice to you and your children. Yet, somehow society has normalized this behavior, and that isn’t okay.

I think age-appropriate money lessons could begin as young as grammar school. Personal finance courses should definitely be part of the curriculum in middle school and high school, but this is rarely the case.

Another layer, which many people avoid discussing, is that many parents themselves were never educated about money, financial well-being, and security.

This issue must be addressed from the ground up. If parents need to learn how money functions and how to make it work for them, it is their responsibility to learn through training, coaching, reading — whatever it takes.

You care for your children in countless ways, so why is teaching them how money works and how to be financially independent often missed?

So, just like these crow parents protect their babies before they learn to fly and leave the nest; you can protect your children by teaching them how money works and help them to fly.

As The MoneyMaestra, one of the coaching services I offer helps parents become fluent in money matters and how to speak to their children about money. I also teach your children about how money works and how to become financially independent.

In the present moment is where life is happening; it is also where taking action with your money must happen.

You can talk about the future you want, the wealth you desire, the trips you dream about, and even the type of house in which you would like to live, but the financial actions needed to make that future happen must occur now.

I call this: Present Moment Money

When you are operating in awareness, you realize that living within your means is not scarcity; it is living in alignment, which brings clarity.

You can also relax and more fully enjoy the present moment because you are choosing to be the boss of your money, not just a bystander.

One day your future will be your present moment, so intentionally use the now to create, build, and grow your financial wellness. By doing so, you are creating a secure future while also savoring the now.
