Happy Labor Day!

Today, we honor the people whose efforts help build a stronger future. Through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, individuals across every profession make a meaningful impact on their families, businesses, and communities.

As we celebrate the value of hard work, it's also a reminder that every career and business journey eventually reaches a transition point. Whether you're planning for retirement, succession, or the future of the business you've worked so hard to build, having a thoughtful exit plan can help ensure your legacy continues long after your work is done.

Thank you for all that you do, and we wish you a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved Labor Day.

Here is what nobody tells you about exit options. They are not a menu you pick from at the end. They are conditions you either built or you did not, years before you ever wanted out. By the time most owners are ready to leave, two of their three doors have quietly closed, and they never heard them shut. The good news is that closed doors can be reopened. It just takes more runway than most owners give themselves. That contractor thought he had 18 months. He actually had closer to five years of work ahead of him to make a second option real.

So be honest with yourself. Of your three exits, how many could actually close this year, with the people and the numbers you have right now? If the answer is one, you already know what to start building.

Markets have been supported by resilient growth and enthusiasm around artificial intelligence, but the policy backdrop may be changing. Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company Chief Investment Officer Brent Schutte explains why sticky inflation, higher debt costs and uncertainty around where AI-related gains ultimately land make diversification especially important. http://spr.ly/6182B1fa34

Dolly Parton grew up the fourth of twelve children in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains. No running water. No electricity. Dirt poor by every measure the world uses to keep score.

One winter she needed a coat, and there was no money to buy one. So her mother took a box of rags, scraps of every color, and sewed them together stitch by stitch into a coat for her little girl. As she sewed, she told Dolly the Bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, so that Dolly would wear it proudly. And she did, until the other children laughed at her for it.

When Dolly came home hurt, her mother told her something she carried the rest of her life. Do not ever call us poor. We may not have as much as other people, but wealth is not measured in dollars. Dolly believed her. She grew up certain she was rich, because the house was full of love, and love was the only currency that ever counted to her.

She spent the next eighty years giving that lesson back to the world.

She gave 332 million books to children. Since 1995, every single month, a free book arrived in the mailbox of a child who might never have owned one, because her own father could not read and she could not bear for another child to carry that weight. Three million kids, five countries, one book at a time. They called her The Book Lady, and she earned every letter of it.

She gave a million dollars to the research that helped bring a COVID vaccine into the world, quietly, before anyone understood what it would become.

She gave meals to the hungry by the millions. She gave a million dollars of her own money to families back home who lost everything in the floods. She gave steady work and dignity to a corner of East Tennessee the rest of the country had forgotten. She wrote thousands of songs, gave the world its language for love and for loss, then handed one of her greatest to another singer and quietly poured the royalties back into a community that needed them.

And she gave all of it as herself. The big hair, the rhinestones, the laugh, the wit. She never once shrank to make anyone comfortable, and she never once let her success harden her heart. She loved everybody, exactly as they were and exactly as they came, without a single condition attached. She stayed kind. She stayed generous. She stayed Dolly, start to finish.

That is what a legacy actually is. Not what you keep. What you keep giving, long after you are gone. The books will still arrive in the mail next month. Children will still open them. And somewhere a child who never met her will learn to read, because a long time ago a poor girl in a coat of many colors decided that every child was rich enough to deserve it.

Thank you, Dolly. You turned the whole world into your coat of many colors, and you held every piece of it together with love. You leave the way you arrived. Rich beyond counting, and none of it money.

Did you know that many business owners have the majority of their wealth tied up in their company?

That's why exit planning matters.

Being exit-ready means building a business that operates at its highest value, creates more options, and has a greater chance of transitioning successfully when the time comes.

The goal isn't necessarily to sell. The goal is to be prepared.

Freedom isn't selling. It's having the choice.
