Were you impacted by the recent severe storms, tornadoes, or flooding in Indiana?
There may be tax relief available to you.
Following a FEMA disaster declaration, the IRS announced tax relief for qualifying individuals and businesses impacted by the severe weather that began August 11, 2026.
For eligible taxpayers, certain federal tax filing and payment deadlines have been postponed to February 1, 2027. How might you be impacted?
The relief can apply to several upcoming tax obligations, including certain:
• Individual and business tax return deadlines
• Quarterly Estimated income tax payments
• Quarterly payroll and certain excise tax returns
• Other qualifying time-sensitive tax actions
One important distinction: if you received an extension to file your 2025 individual income tax return, the filing deadline may qualify for relief, but any 2025 tax payment that was originally due April 15, 2026, is not postponed under this announcement. However, estimated tax payments due after 8/11/26 have had their due date pushed back to 2/1/27, which can be meaningful for those who have larger estimated tax payments.
Disaster situations create enough uncertainty on their own. Understanding how the tax rules apply to your specific situation shouldn’t add to it.
