Apparently I’m a Hidden Gem now. 😄

VoyageKC recently featured me and Dunham Bookkeeping Services, so I got to share a little more about how DBS started and why I care so much about giving small business owners bookkeeping and tax help without making everything feel scary or overly complicated.

And since I apparently need to get better at telling people this, I also have a monthly newsletter with practical bookkeeping and tax tips plus free downloads. There’s an accounting tracker, a year-end bookkeeping checklist, a list of common bookkeeping mistakes, and more.

Your nonprofit’s 990 should not be an annual scavenger hunt. 😬

Good 990 preparation starts long before the return is due. You may need records for grants, fundraising, program expenses, compensation, contractors, board changes and other activity from throughout the year.

Clean bookkeeping makes the return easier to prepare and gives your board better information along the way too.

Well, this was a fun email to wake up to this morning. 💚

My VoyageKC interview is officially live!

I had the chance to talk about my story, Dunham Bookkeeping Services, and the road that brought me to where I am today. Running a small business definitely wasn’t part of some perfectly mapped-out master plan, but I’m incredibly grateful for what this business has grown into and for the clients who trust me to be part of theirs.

Thank you to VoyageKC for including me in the Hidden Gems series and giving local small business owners a place to share a little more of the story behind the business.

One of my favorite small-business myths to kill: “There’s money in the bank, so the business must be profitable.” 😬

Not necessarily.

That balance might include loan proceeds, customer deposits, owner contributions, sales tax, or money you still need to use for bills and credit cards. And a profitable business can have a lower cash balance after paying debt, buying equipment, or taking an owner draw.

Your checking account tells you how much cash is there today. It does not replace your profit and loss statement.

Money in the bank does not tell you how much your business made. Here’s why your cash balance and your profit can look completely different.

Friendly tax deadline reminder for tomorrow. 📅

September 15 is the third 2026 estimated tax payment deadline for individuals who need to make estimated payments. It’s also the extended filing deadline for calendar-year partnerships and S corporations.

This is not the week to discover you never made your June estimate or that your extended business return is still missing information.

Here’s what business owners should check before the deadline:

Your bookkeeping may need a fall cleanup too. 🍂

September is a good time to deal with unreconciled accounts, uncategorized transactions, duplicate entries and those weird balances you’ve been meaning to investigate.

Waiting until tax season usually makes cleanup more stressful and more expensive. Getting it handled now gives you cleaner reports for the rest of the year and a much easier start to tax season.

Need help catching up or cleaning things up? DBS offers cleanup and catch-up accounting for small businesses and nonprofits.

No one wants to spend December digging through receipts and trying to remember what happened back in March.

August is a great time to start preparing your books for year-end without turning it into a giant project.

A few good places to start:

• Bring bank and credit card reconciliations current
• Clear out uncategorized transactions
• Review old customer invoices and vendor bills
• Check business loan balances
• Gather missing W-9s and other tax documents
• Look over your Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet

You do not need to close the year today. The goal is to catch problems while there is still plenty of time to fix them.

Dunham Bookkeeping Services can help you clean up the backlog and keep your books current through year-end.

Monthly bookkeeping is not just someone clicking through the bank feed once a month.

A good monthly process may include:

• Reconciling bank and credit card accounts
• Reviewing income and expense categories
• Correcting duplicate or missing transactions
• Checking loans and other balance sheet accounts
• Reviewing unpaid customer invoices or vendor bills
• Preparing financial reports
• Flagging questions before they become bigger problems

The real value is consistency. Your books stay current, tax preparation is easier, and you have better information when a decision needs to be made.

Dunham Bookkeeping Services helps service-based small businesses keep accurate books without giving up evenings and weekends to QuickBooks.

Bookkeeping problems aren’t always obvious. Sometimes everything looks fine until you open a report and realize the numbers don’t make sense.

A few signs your books may need cleanup:

• QuickBooks and the bank don’t agree
• Transactions have been waiting months for categories
• Old invoices or bills are still showing as open
• Duplicate income or expenses appear in reports
• Loan balances look wrong
• You don’t trust the Profit and Loss or Balance Sheet

You don’t need to know exactly what went wrong before asking for help. That’s part of the cleanup process.

Dunham Bookkeeping Services can review the books, identify the problems, and create a plan to correct them. Learn more at

The school-supply aisles are full, calendars are filling up, and August is giving all of us a little fresh-start energy. Your bookkeeping can use some of that too.

Maybe your reconciliations are behind. Maybe QuickBooks has a pile of transactions waiting for answers. Maybe you avoid the reports because you don’t fully trust them.

That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means the system needs attention.

Dunham Bookkeeping Services can help clean up the backlog and create a monthly process that feels manageable. Let’s get your books ready for fall without sacrificing another weekend.
