Important Tax Filing Reminder for 2026: Claim Your Dependents Accurately. If you have one child, file for that child. If you have three or six children, file for all of them. The IRS is enforcing strict compliance regarding dependents, and it's crucial to follow the proper procedures. Ensure you claim children who reside with you and receive support from you on your tax return if you qualify. Avoid engaging in questionable practices that may lead to audits, delays, and correspondence. Tax season 2026 demands diligence and adherence to tax regulations. That's the advisory.

Tax Tip from Mobile Tax Professional & Notary

What “Dependent” Means to the IRS

A dependent is determined by IRS rules not personal relationships or financial help alone.

For child dependents, the IRS considers relationship, age, residency, and support. The child must live with you more than half the year, and you must provide over 50% of their support. Certain temporary absences are allowed, but shared custody requires careful review.

For adult dependents, income limits apply, and you must provide the majority of their support.

Claiming an ineligible dependent can lead to delayed refunds, disallowed credits, or audits!

TAX TIP ON FILING STATUS

Filing status is based on IRS rules and household reality, not a vibe or preference. Here's the breakdown:

Single: Unmarried or legally separated, don't qualify for Head of Household (HOH).

HOH: Unmarried, paid over half household costs, and have a qualifying dependent.

Married Filing Jointly (MFJ): Combines income, best tax rates, both spouses responsible. Married Filing Separately (MFS): Each spouse files separately, often higher tax, used for legal or financial reasons.

Qualifying Widow(er): Spouse passed away, dependent child, maintained household.

Your filing status affects standard deduction, tax rate, credit eligibility, and audit risk. Ensure accuracy and provability according to IRS guidelines.
