I don’t know who needs to hear this but…
You don’t need to have every single thing figured out before you start planning.
You can adjust as you go.
If fact that's the best way to do it.
Because nothing is ever perfect right now.
The plan helps you do that.
Most of the time we start with:
What do you have?
What matters to you?
What future do you want for your family?
That’s enough.
The perfect starting point.

People don’t usually wait to organize because they’re irresponsible.
They wait because that never feels urgent.
Until suddenly it is.
The families I work with who feel the most prepared usually aren’t the ones with the most complicated plans.
They’re the ones who simply know where things are.
They're the ones who had had conversations with their loved ones.
They're the ones who simply have a plan.
Do you?

One thing I don’t think people realize until they go through it…
Settling someone’s finances after they pass rarely takes a few weeks.
Even when there’s a will.
Even when documents are in place.
There are calls.
Waiting periods.
Forms.
Accounts.
Follow-ups.
And all of that happens while someone is grieving.
That’s one of the reasons I care so much about organization.
Planning doesn’t remove the hard parts… but it can remove unnecessary confusion.
I've created a beneficiary handbook and checklist as well as a family financial meeting agenda. You can download them and at least get the conversations started.
Get them here:

Pictured here with my dad own my wedding day. He passed away a few years ago. But he and my mom had a plan. Had everything organized. And what a gift that was for us.

Your parents have a financial advisor? And you have questions? Because they haven't talked to you about anything?
You can still ask questions to learn more.
Ask them questions.
As your own advisor questions.
Not to take over. But just to understand that someday you may be the person helping.
Questions like:
What should I know?
Do they know where all the important documents are?
Do I know who to call?
Have beneficiaries been updated?
That’s not being intrusive.
That’s being thoughtful.
I have a financial family meeting agenda that may help get the conversations started here https://www.empowerwealth.net/family-meeting-agenda

I keep talking about it but it's really important.
If something happened tomorrow, would somebody know what to do?
Would they know:
where important documents are
who your advisor is
what accounts they need to access
who to call first?
At some point planning becomes about making life easier for the people around you.
This is important at any age. And especially is you are 5-10 years from retirement because you have a lot more that you are managing than you did in your 20s.

I’ll say this simply :)
Planning your finances isn’t about having everything perfect.
It’s about making sure you are doing what you need to, to get where you want to be.
It's about someone else being able to step in and figure things out if they needed to.
It's about creating clarity for your family, your kids (like I've done for my daughter Hadley here)
That’s what clarity really looks like.
It's a gift you are giving not only yourself, but them as well.
This get's even more crucial as we approach retirement.
Those 5-10 years before retirement is when planning gives you the most options.
Don't miss your window.

I don’t want to overwhelm my kids with all of this.
That's something I've heard that said a lot.
I know, we want to take care of our kids, not the other way around.
But even kids as young as 18 should know this.
Because when nothing is shared, even in a simple way, it doesn’t make things easier later.
It just makes things more unclear.
More stressful.
More scary in times that are already hard.
You don’t have to explain everything.
You don’t have to go through every number.
But letting them know where things are…
who to call…
what matters to you…
That’s the part that helps.
It turns something overwhelming and scary into something manageable.

I don’t talk about this enough… but I really love what I do.
I think we all want to help others in some way.
And I just happen to really care about helping people feel clarity around their life and family.
Because I’ve seen what it looks like when things aren’t clear.
Chaotic. Stressful. Worrisome.
And I’ve also seen the other side.
When everything is written down.
When the right people know what’s going on.
When someone can step in and say, “Okay, I got it.”
That’s the part I care about.
It's why I've stayed in this line of work. Why I continue to educate myself and grow in this space.
Because of the people I get to help.
If you’ve ever said, “I should probably get this more organized…” or “I don’t even know where to start…”
You can just talk to me.
No pressure. No expectation.
We’ll just walk through what you have, what matters to you, and what might make things feel a little clearer.
And if it’s not a fit, that’s completely okay.
I’d still want you to leave that conversation feeling more organized than before.

A quick reminder, you can start simple.
You don’t need a full plan from A-Z to get started.
You just need a starting point.
We can talk it out as we go.
If you've been putting things off, here is a great starting point.
