Would you prefer a portfolio that earns 8% or 6%?
Eight, obviously. But there’s more to it than just returns. What did you have to risk to get it? And were you withdrawing money along the way?
For retirees living off their investments, a big loss at the wrong time can force withdrawals from a declining portfolio, leaving fewer dollars to recover.
Bottom line: the highest expected return isn't automatically the best choice.
Sometimes accepting a little less upside buys you something more valuable: stability when you need it most.
