Paying dividends isn’t the only way to take cash out of your C corporation. Corporate distributions are generally taxable to you to the extent of your company’s “earnings and profits,” and your company can’t deduct them.

To avoid dividend treatment, consider having your business repay bona fide loans you’ve made to it or taking out properly structured loans from it. You might also increase your compensation (as long as it’s still “reasonable”) or qualifying tax-free fringe benefits — or lease or sell assets to your business.

Before proceeding, evaluate the tax implications for you and your corporation. Contact us to review the applicable rules and determine what’s right for your situation.

Watch out for the growing reach of the 3.8% net investment income tax (NIIT). The income thresholds haven’t changed since the tax took effect in 2013, so it’s hitting more taxpayers. If you have net investment income (NII) and your 2026 modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $200,000 ($250,000 if you’re married and file jointly, half that if you file separately), you’ll be subject to the NIIT on the lesser of your NII or the amount by which your MAGI exceeds the applicable threshold. Some NII examples are taxable interest, dividends, and gains from stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Year-end planning may help reduce your MAGI or NII — and the NIIT’s impact. Tax law changes taking effect this year will increase alternative minimum tax (AMT) risk for some higher-income taxpayers. For 2026, the AMT exemption phaseout thresholds are reduced and the exemption phases out twice as fast as for 2025. If you may be affected, consider the AMT before implementing income and deduction timing strategies. A move that would reduce your 2026 regular tax might provide little or no benefit under the AMT — or could trigger it. Before acting, determine whether you may owe the AMT for 2026 or 2027 and how the move would affect both calculations. We can help project your regular tax and AMT liability for both years and the potential impact of timing strategies.

Transferring wealth to grandchildren, great-grandchildren or other beneficiaries decades younger than you can trigger the generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax, potentially adding a significant tax burden. Generally, the GST tax applies to certain transfers to a “skip person.” A skip person may be a grandchild or another family member who’s two or more generations below the person making the transfer. An unrelated individual generally is considered a skip person if he or she is more than 37½ years younger than the transferor. The GST tax rate is 40%, and for 2026, a $15 million GST tax exemption is available. Contact us to learn how to minimize your GST tax exposure.

A surviving spouse may have the option to file either a joint or separate federal income tax return for the year of his or her spouse’s death. Here are some factors to consider to help determine the most appropriate filing choice.

Teachers and other educators often spend their own money on books, supplies, equipment and other classroom needs. For 2026, eligible educators may have two ways to deduct qualifying unreimbursed expenses: A deduction of up to $350 is available whether or not they itemize, and a new deduction with no dollar cap is available to itemizers. Educators eligible for both deductions can first claim the above-the-line deduction and reap the benefits of reducing their adjusted gross income and, if they have eligible expenses in excess of $350, claim the itemized deduction for those excess expenses. (Educators can’t claim both deductions for the same expenses.) Contact us to see if you may be eligible.

Do you operate a side gig in addition to your regular job? The way the IRS classifies that activity can have a significant impact on your taxes.

If the IRS treats the activity as a hobby, you’re required to report the income but can’t deduct most related expenses. If it’s treated as a business, you can generally deduct ordinary and necessary expenses — even if that results in a net tax loss. The IRS considers several factors when evaluating profit motive, including how you operate the activity, the time you invest, and your history of profits and losses.

If your side business isn’t yet profitable, contact us to discuss your situation. We can suggest strategies to help strengthen your position.
