It's becoming a lot more common for people to file tax returns in States other than where they reside. With the prevalence of “telecommuting”, “teleworking”, etc., a person who lives in and carries out their employment functions entirely in one state may find their employer erroneously withholding and remitting income tax to another.
Complicating matters, many employers utilize “portals” and other online resources to provide information to employees that has, traditionally, been shown on a paper "pay stub", leading to a situation where an employee may not even know that they’re paying income tax in the wrong state.
The result is that an employee can end up with a tax liability in their home state, along with a penalty for failure to properly remit income tax timely, and have to file an income tax return in another state to claim a refund - a process which can be, in a word, cumbersome.
If you’ve taken up telework employment with an out-of-state company with no local office where you reside, be sure that your employer is withholding properly. If they're not, talk to me about how you can remedy that situation quickly, what your tax filing obligations may be and how you can potentially expedite your out-of-state refund claim.
