Here's a tax strategy that rewards planning years in advance: QSBS. π
Qualified Small Business Stock can let founders, early employees, and investors exclude a significant portion β sometimes all β of their gain when they eventually sell their stock. Depending on when the stock was issued, that exclusion can be 50%, 75%, or even 100%.
The catch? It's not automatic, and timing matters as much as eligibility:
β Stock generally must come from a domestic C-corporation
β It must be acquired at original issuance, not purchased later
β It typically must be held for more than 5 years
By the time a company is preparing for a sale, it's often too late to restructure in a way that preserves this benefit. That's why QSBS needs to be part of the conversation early β not a last-minute bonus.
