A lot of small business owners treat depreciation as something their accountant handles automatically. And while a good CPA will absolutely manage this for you, understanding the basics yourself can make a real difference. 💼

Why? Because depreciation decisions made during the year — not just at tax time — affect how much you owe.

Knowing whether to claim Section 179, take bonus depreciation, or spread deductions out requires knowing your income picture before year-end.

Here's what our updated guide covers:

✔️ The difference between Section 179 and bonus depreciation in plain terms
✔️ Which assets qualify and which ones don't
✔️ How your business structure affects where and how you claim depreciation
✔️ What MACRS means and why most businesses follow it by default
✔️ The real cost of getting placement-in-service dates wrong

Depreciation done right is one of the most consistent ways to lower your tax bill. 📊

Your parent doesn't have to live with you for it to affect your taxes. 🏡

Whether Mom or Dad is in your spare room, their own house, or assisted living, the support you provide can still count. And if you're on extension, the October 15 deadline is close.

Before you file, it's worth checking:

✔️ Whether your parent qualifies as your dependent based on their income and your support
✔️ Medical bills you paid for them, which can count even if they don't qualify as a dependent
✔️ Head of household status, which can apply even when your parent lives elsewhere
✔️ Whether your parent needs to file their own return

A few minutes of review now can keep you from leaving money on the table.

Got an IRS letter about your R&D tax credit? 📬 Don't panic, and don't start sending documents yet.

An audit does not automatically mean the credit will be denied. It does mean you need to show how your research and your expenses connect.

Here's where to start:

✔️ Read the notice for the tax year, the issues listed, and the response deadline
✔️ Ask your team not to delete project files, emails, or time records
✔️ Pull the filed return, Form 6765, and the original R&D study
✔️ Organize your records by project, employee, and expense
✔️ Never backdate or create records that didn't exist

Filing an extended return with an R&D claim this October? It's a good time to check that the support is there too.

Filed an extension this year? The October 15 deadline is almost here. ⏰

Before you file, it's worth a second look at your R&D tax credit claim. The last-minute rush is exactly when these mistakes slip through:

✔️ Documentation pulled together from memory instead of real records
✔️ Wages claimed by job title instead of actual time on research
✔️ Research a client paid for and now owns
✔️ Form 6765 Section G left vague or incomplete
✔️ Claiming routine work that was never really experimentation

An overstated claim can trigger an exam and penalties of up to 20%. A few minutes of review now beats explaining it to the IRS later.
