🚨 Received a Letter From the IRS? Don't Panic but Don't Ignore It!

An IRS letter can be stressful, especially when you're unsure what it means. But the right response starts with understanding the notice and taking action before the deadline.

Here are 5 steps to take if you receive an IRS letter:

📩 1. Read the Entire Notice. Identify why the IRS contacted you, the tax year involved, and what action is being requested.

🔍 2. Verify the Details. Compare the information in the letter with your tax return, payment records, and other documents.

📅 3. Check the Deadline. Some notices require a response within a specific period. Missing that deadline could limit your options or lead to further collection activity.

📂 4. Gather Your Records. Keep copies of your tax returns, receipts, payment confirmations, and any documents relevant to the issue.

☎️ 5. Respond Appropriately. Follow the notice's instructions. If you disagree, need more time, or don't understand what to do, consider seeking qualified tax assistance.

💡 Remember: Not every IRS letter means you owe additional tax. Some request information, explain an adjustment, or confirm an action.

The most important thing? Don't ignore it and hope it goes away.

🚨 Can You Settle Your IRS Tax Debt for Less Than You Owe? The IRS Looks at More Than Just Your Offer!

If your tax debt feels impossible to pay in full, an Offer in Compromise (OIC) may be an option worth exploring. But approval isn't automatic. The IRS carefully reviews your financial situation before deciding whether to accept your offer.

Here's what matters:

💰 Income: How much do you earn, and what other income do you receive?

🏠 Living Expenses: What are your necessary household expenses, including housing, food, utilities, transportation, and healthcare?

🏦 Assets: What do you own, and how much equity may be available in your property, vehicles, bank accounts, and other assets?

📊 Ability to Pay: The IRS generally evaluates your reasonable collection potential, which considers your assets and future income after allowable expenses.

📋 Tax Compliance: Required tax returns generally must be filed, and applicable estimated tax payments or withholding requirements must be met.

💡 The bottom line: The IRS doesn't approve an OIC simply because you cannot afford your tax bill. Your financial circumstances and eligibility determine whether an offer may be accepted.

Not sure whether an OIC is right for you? World Tax & Accounting can help you understand your potential tax resolution options.

🚨 Can’t Afford to Pay the IRS Without Sacrificing Your Basic Needs? You May Have Options.

When tax debt becomes overwhelming, paying the IRS can feel impossible especially when you're struggling to cover rent, groceries, utilities, and medical expenses.

That’s where Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status may come into the picture.

But how does the IRS determine whether you qualify?

💰 Income: What money is coming into your household?

🏠 Necessary expenses: How much do you need for housing, food, utilities, transportation, and healthcare?

📋 Financial resources: The IRS may review your assets, bank accounts, and other financial information.

⚖️ Ability to pay: After evaluating your financial situation, the IRS determines whether you can afford to pay your tax debt while meeting necessary living expenses.

If approved, CNC status may temporarily delay certain collection actions. However, your tax debt does not disappear, and interest and penalties generally continue to accrue.

💡 Important: CNC status isn't automatic. The IRS evaluates your individual circumstances, and supporting financial information may be required.

🚨 Filed Late? Paid Late? The IRS Doesn’t Treat Them the Same!

Did you know the IRS can charge you two different penalties for your tax bill?

📄 Failure-to-File Penalty: Generally, 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month your return is late, up to 25%.

💸 Failure-to-Pay Penalty: Generally, 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month your payment is late, up to 25%.

And yes, interest may add to the amount you owe. If both penalties apply, the failure-to-file penalty is generally reduced by the failure-to-pay penalty for the same month.

Here’s the important part: If you can’t afford to pay your full tax bill, don’t assume you should wait to file. Filing on time may help you avoid the larger failure-to-file penalty.

You may also have options, including an IRS payment plan or potential penalty relief, depending on your circumstances.

📅 Why Staying Compliant with Future Tax Filings Matters

When taxpayers resolve a tax issue, it's easy to think the hard part is over.

But there's one important step that often gets overlooked:

✅ Staying current with future tax filings and payments.

Whether you've set up a payment plan, received penalty relief, or are working through another tax resolution option, keeping up with future tax obligations is often essential.

Why?

📌 It helps you avoid new penalties and interest.
📌 It can help protect existing resolution agreements.
📌 It reduces the risk of future IRS collection actions.
📌 It helps you stay on track toward long-term financial stability.

Think of tax compliance like maintaining a healthy credit score—it requires ongoing attention, not just a one-time fix.

💡 The goal isn't just solving yesterday's tax problem. It's preventing tomorrow's.

⏰ The Sooner You Act, The More Options You May Have

One of the biggest mistakes taxpayers make is waiting too long to address a tax problem.

Unanswered notices can lead to additional penalties, interest, and collection actions.

Whether it's a notice, tax debt, or an IRS inquiry, addressing it early can often provide more flexibility and more potential solutions.

🚨 TODAY IS THE DEADLINE! October 15 Is Here! ⏰

The countdown is over! If you requested an extension for your eligible 2025 federal individual income tax return, today, October 15, 2026, is generally your final filing deadline.

Still have documents to organise or details to double-check? Now is the time to act!

📌 Remember: An extension gives you more time to FILE, not more time to PAY. If you owe taxes, interest and applicable penalties may still apply.

Don't let the deadline catch you off guard. If you haven't filed yet, take action today.

🤝 What Is an Offer in Compromise?

An Offer in Compromise (OIC) is a program that may allow qualifying taxpayers to settle their tax debt for less than the full amount owed.

Not everyone qualifies, and the IRS carefully reviews each application.

A Tax Resolution Specialist can help evaluate whether an OIC may be appropriate based on your financial circumstances.

💡 Understanding your eligibility is the first step.
