🏖️ Doctors Get PTO But Most Say It Is Never Really Time Off
The American Medical Association just reported that 60% of physicians take 15 or fewer vacation days a year and one in five take fewer than five. 📉 Even when they do take time off, 70% of doctors are still working on a typical "vacation day" by fielding patient calls, answering messages, and catching up on charts. The AMA is calling it "pretend time off" because it is PTO in name only. Two in five healthcare workers now say their jobs feel unsustainable. Whether you work in healthcare or just know someone who does, this one hits close to home. 👇
People who think doctors need to just deal with it will tell you that this is what they signed up for. 🏫 Medical school takes 8 years, residency takes another 3 to 7, and nobody forced them into it. Doctors are among the highest paid professionals in the country and part of that compensation is the understanding that patient care does not stop because you are at the beach. People's lives are on the line and that comes with a different set of rules than a desk job. From this perspective, if you wanted a career with clean PTO boundaries and an out of office reply that actually means something, medicine was probably not the right call. 🤷
People who think this is a real problem will tell you that burned out doctors make worse decisions and that affects everyone. 🚨 Research shows that taking more than three weeks of real vacation per year is directly linked to lower burnout. But most doctors cannot take real vacation because nobody is covering their inbox, their patients still need them, and their compensation gets docked if they step away. The system punishes doctors for resting and then wonders why half of them want to quit. From this perspective, "pretend time off" is not just a doctor problem. It is a patient safety problem disguised as a scheduling issue. ❤️
