I had the privilege of presenting to a room of Edward Jones financial advisors, and a big topic was Roth Conversions. When do they make sense, and when to avoid them?
The point of Roth conversions?
Pay a little tax now 💲
Save a lot of tax later by moving your retirement assets from pre-tax to after-tax 💲💲💲
It sounds like a good deal, but it's not for everyone! The most beneficial times to pull it off:
👴Retirees between income sources (haven't started drawing social security or drawing from IRAs yet)
📉Businesses owners with unusually low-income years (pay tax on the conversion at low or zero rates)
🧑🌾 Farmers taking bonus depreciation on farm buildings (take advantage of large losses created)
💵 Retirees with very large 401(k) accounts (Reduce required distributions later, plus helpful for heirs)
⚠️ Roth conversions can also come with surprise tax bills if done at the wrong time, so be sure to ask your financial advisor or CPA before converting!
