🛒 Why are grocery prices up? The answer is more complicated than you might think. 📊
It's hard to believe that global markets, wildfires, or events thousands of miles away can affect the price of groceries in your hometown, but that's reality.
Nebraska's independent grocers are navigating rising fuel and transportation costs, burdensome swipe fees, escalating insurance premiums, and increasing minimum wage + new paid leave mandates, all while competing with national chains and dollar stores.
Our local grocers aren't getting rich while everyone else struggles. They're facing many of the same pressures as their customers, trying to keep shelves stocked, employees paid, and prices competitive.
Still, as complicated as this sounds, U.S. households devote a smaller percentage of their overall income to food than any other country thanks to our incredible farming/ranching community and economies of scale.
Behind every grocery price tag is a complex supply chain, and often a local business doing everything it can to sustainably serve its community.
