The One Big Beautiful Bill Act reshaped a lot for the 2026 tax year, from permanent rate cuts to new deductions and bigger write-offs for business owners.

Swipe through for the highlights, and remember that Rhode Island does not follow every federal change. When you are ready to plan, EHG CPAs can help you make sense of it all.

2026 brought some of the biggest tax changes since 2017.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made the lower individual tax rates and the 20% Qualified Business Income deduction permanent, while adding new deductions and reporting rules.

At the same time, Rhode Island has its own updates that do not always follow the federal lead. The clients who feel most confident are the ones who understand these shifts before filing season. That is exactly the kind of guidance EHG CPAs is here to provide.

Planning a big equipment purchase? The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made this a strong year for business investment. It permanently restored 100% bonus depreciation and raised the Section 179 expensing limit to $2.56 million. In many cases, that means you can deduct the full cost of qualifying equipment, vehicles, or software in the year you place it in service, rather than spreading it out over several years.

Timing and entity structure matter, so a quick conversation before year-end can make a real difference. EHG CPAs can help you plan the purchase right.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act brings a few new deductions worth knowing for the 2026 tax year. Taxpayers who take the standard deduction can now deduct up to $1,000 (or $2,000 for joint filers) in cash charitable contributions. Filers 65 and older may qualify for an additional $6,000 senior deduction, and the SALT deduction cap rises to roughly $40,400. One important note for our region: Rhode Island has chosen not to conform to the federal no-tax-on-tips provision, so state treatment can differ from federal.

Curious how these apply to your return? EHG CPAs can help you plan ahead.

Renting out a property in Rhode Island?

Two changes took effect at the beginning of the year. The local hotel tax on all short-term rentals rose from 1% to 2%, and the state added a new 5% whole-home short-term rental tax that applies when an entire residential dwelling is rented out. These apply to vacation rentals and properties listed on platforms like Airbnb and VRBO, and the tax is based on the date of occupancy, not the booking date.

If you host short-term rentals, now is the time to review how you collect and remit. EHG CPAs can walk you through it.

Here is where 1099 rules get tricky in 2026. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act raised the federal 1099-NEC reporting threshold from $600 to $2,000 for payments made on or after January 1, 2026. Good news federally, but Rhode Island still requires a state 1099 filing at just $100. That means you could be off the hook for the federal form while still owing a state filing. Knowing the difference keeps you compliant on both fronts.

Questions about which contractors this covers? Let's talk.

Rhode Island quietly changed the rules on 1099 filings. Beginning with the 2025 tax year, businesses must file Form 1099 directly with the RI Division of Taxation whenever more than $100 in income is reported, even if no Rhode Island tax was withheld. This applies across the 1099 series, including 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, and 1099-INT. Rhode Island also does not participate in the IRS Combined Federal/State Filing Program, so a separate state submission is required.

Not sure if this affects your filings? EHG CPAs can help you sort it out.

Retirement planning is about more than reaching a certain number in your investment account.

It's about creating a roadmap for the life you want to live.

Before you retire, take time to think through your goals, income sources, health, Social Security strategy, work plans, and the unexpected events that could impact your future.

The earlier you start planning, the more options you'll have when it's time to begin your next chapter.

What does your ideal retirement look like?

When people think about accounting services, they often think about tax returns, payroll, and financial statements.

But what many business owners are really looking for is something else:

Peace of mind.

The confidence that tax deadlines won't be missed.

The reassurance that payroll is accurate.

The comfort of having a trusted professional to turn to when questions arise.

At EHG CPAs, we believe our role goes beyond preparing forms and crunching numbers. We're here to help our clients make informed decisions, navigate challenges, and focus on what matters most—their business, their families, and their future.
