The "Uncategorized" junk drawer
Every QuickBooks file has a junk drawer.
It's called Uncategorized. It's where a transaction lands when nobody is sure what it is yet. A charge you don't recognize. A deposit with no invoice attached. It isn't wrong. It's just waiting on a decision.
Part of my job is emptying that drawer. Every item gets looked at, named, and put where it belongs. Until it's categorized, it can't tell you anything.
I've come to believe every business owner has an Uncategorized account that has nothing to do with money.
The big decision you made in July that you still can't call a win or a mistake.
The conversation with a client or employee you keep replaying.
The idea you tried once and never went back to.
It sits there, taking up space, teaching you nothing.
This Friday, pick one. Give it a name. "That worked." "That didn't." "That's worth another try." Then put it where it belongs.
Q3 is closed. Your junk drawer doesn't have to come with you into Q4.
What's one thing from this quarter you're finally ready to categorize? Tell me in the comments.
