A revocable living trust offers key advantages: it helps your assets avoid probate, keeps your financial matters private, and ensures smooth financial management if you become incapacitated. These benefits can bring real peace of mind.

However, it’s important to understand what a living trust does NOT do: it doesn’t reduce your taxes. Since you maintain full control of the assets, the IRS still considers them yours during your lifetime and as part of your estate when you pass.

True tax-saving trust strategies usually involve giving up control of your assets permanently. Whether that makes sense depends on your unique situation. Like many aspects of financial planning, it’s all about balancing the trade-offs.

Tough years for returns can actually be the best time to invest.

It might seem surprising, but here’s why it makes sense:

When you keep investing during a down year (or several), you’re buying shares in the same companies with the same earnings potential, but at much lower prices than before.

In most markets, this would be seen as a great sale. In the stock market, it’s often labeled a crisis.

As families plan their annual gifts, a common question comes up: Should we give cash or appreciated assets?

Cash is simple, easy to transfer, has a clear value, and usually has no tax impact beyond the annual exclusion.

But gifting appreciated assets like stocks or mutual funds can be a smarter move. When you gift these, the recipient inherits your original cost basis, including any unrealized capital gains.

Why does that matter? If the recipient is in a lower capital gains tax bracket, they might sell the asset and pay less tax or even no federal capital gains tax at all.

For parents or grandparents gifting to young adults early in their careers, this approach can pass not just the asset, but the growth, to someone who may benefit from a more favorable tax situation.

Here’s a simple question to ask yourself whenever the news feels overwhelming:

"Will this still matter for my financial future 10 years from now?"

If the honest answer is no, then it probably shouldn’t influence your decisions today.

We get caught up in daily headlines, but most financial choices unfold over decades. Very few news stories actually have a lasting impact.

Sure, some events matter long-term, but those are rare exceptions.

That means most of what seems urgent right now isn’t truly urgent. It likely won’t affect your long-term goals.

This perspective makes long-term investing easier. We can focus less on daily noise and more on time and steady progress; they’re the real drivers of financial success.

Since 1942, the average bull market has lasted 4.4 years and delivered gains of 151.6%.

In contrast, the average bear market lasts about 11 months and sees a decline of 31.7%.

Bull markets not only last about four times longer but also grow nearly five times more than the losses experienced in bear markets.

Despite this, many investors focus more on avoiding bear markets instead of making sure they fully benefit from bull markets.

Many of our clients find they don’t actually “need” their Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from their IRAs, so a common question is: what should you do with that money?

Here are some thoughtful options:

1) Reinvest the after-tax amount into a taxable account. This keeps your money working within your financial plan, continues compounding, and provides your heirs with a flexible asset that can enjoy favorable tax treatment when inherited.

2) Use the after-tax proceeds to pay tuition directly to a grandchild’s university. Direct payments to qualifying educational institutions are exempt from gift tax rules, letting you pass along meaningful wealth without affecting your annual gift tax exclusion.

3) Fund that long-planned family trip, the one everyone talks about but hasn’t taken yet. It’s an opportunity to create lasting memories that outshine any financial asset.

4) Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution of up to $111,000 in 2026, sending money straight from your IRA to a charity you care about. This counts toward your RMD without increasing your taxable income.

Since RMDs are required regardless, you can choose how to use them to best support your goals and values.

If you’re planning to retire before you qualify for Medicare, here’s an important insight to keep in mind.

Your retirement income directly affects how much you’ll pay for a marketplace health insurance plan.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, premium tax credits are available on a sliding scale based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income.

That means in early retirement (before Social Security, required minimum distributions, and possibly before you have much taxable income) you could qualify for significant subsidies. These can make marketplace coverage much more affordable than you might expect.

But there’s a key detail:

Because these subsidies depend on your income, the way you generate income in early retirement can make a big difference in your costs.

With careful planning and withdrawal strategies, you may be able to manage your income to keep qualifying for these credits.

This kind of planning can potentially save you thousands of dollars each year.

It’s smart to run the numbers with someone who understands how these pieces work together to create the best outcome for you.

The next time someone tells you the world is falling apart, try asking:

"Compared to when?"

Compared to 1900, when the average life expectancy was just 32 years and over one-third of children didn’t live past age five?

Compared to 1950, when more than half the global population lived in extreme poverty?

Compared to 1980, when over 20% of adults worldwide were unable to read or write?

By nearly every measure, the world has made remarkable progress no matter the starting point you choose.

That doesn’t mean today’s challenges aren’t real. They are.

But the idea that “things have never been worse” falls apart when you look at the facts.

When in doubt, look to the data.

When people talk about wanting to “protect their money,” it’s important to ask:

Protect it from what exactly?

Market ups and downs?
Or losing purchasing power?

These are very different risks.

Avoiding market swings can feel like protection; it feels safe. But for diversified investors with a long-term view, volatility is usually temporary.

The bigger concern is whether your money grows enough to keep pace with rising expenses. That’s a lasting risk many overlook.

Over decades, the timeframe most retirement goals span, it’s clear which risk matters more.

If your portfolio can’t support your lifestyle over time, it hasn’t succeeded.
