Debt is getting more expensive all over the world. The US 10-year just hit a fresh 52-week high, and bond yields are climbing from Germany to Japan.

In one country, the spike in rates is already dragging its stock market down double digits. Is that a warning sign for everyone else?

For now, investors are betting that rates will moderate and AI-fueled profits will keep pushing stocks higher. But rates and stocks can only rally together for so long.

On today's Market Update, Corey Hinkle covers all of the above and digs into corporate balance sheets to see who is really exposed to more expensive debt, and which US sector is starting to feel the pain.

The S&P 500 just notched an intraday all-time high. Nvidia is at new highs. Tech (XLK) has broken through a Fibonacci level going back to the dot-com bubble. Bitcoin is back above its 200-day moving average. The equal-weight S&P 500 and regional banks have stabilized. And market breadth just got as weak as it was at the March 2026 bottom, which is where the last leg higher started.

There is one chart that doesn't fit: junk bond credit spreads are blowing out while stocks make new highs. Historically, that has come with volatility.

Corey Hinkle walks through six bullish charts and one bearish one as the market continues higher.

Which chart matters most to you right now?

Sold a business, stock, or crypto this year and facing a capital gains bill?

Opportunity Zones may let you defer that tax and invest in real estate, with potential tax-free growth after a 10-year hold. New rules start January 1, 2027, including a rolling five-year deferral and a 10% step-up in basis.

In this video, Steve covers how they work, what's changing, and how to track it on your tax return. The clock is 180 days from your gain, so now is the time to plan.

Join us tomorrow, 4:30–6:30 pm, to hear Matthew Hannon of Inland Securities go deeper. Food and drinks provided.

Q4 is here, and historically November and December are some of the strongest months of the year for stocks. But this year the rally has some conditions attached.

With the 10-year Treasury yield around 5.3%, rates need to at least stop climbing. Oil needs to moderate, which likely means real progress in the Middle East. The midterms could act as a clearing event. And AI has to keep delivering. Micron just reported $54 billion in quarterly revenue, up from about $11 billion a year ago, and the stock still fell.

Corey Hinkle walks through the storylines most likely to move markets this quarter and what our base case looks like.

How bullish are you right now?

Are rate hikes going to pop the AI bubble? A client asked us that this week, so we went back to 1999.

The Fed raised rates four times between the start of that hiking cycle and the Nasdaq's peak in March 2000. At the same time, Cisco's inventories were piling up and many of its customers were borrowing heavily to build out the internet.

Today the market is pricing roughly even odds of four or more hikes over the next year, Nvidia's inventories are climbing, and Oracle is taking on significant debt to build data centers. But Nvidia's biggest customers are the strongest companies in the world, which is a big difference from 2000.

Corey Hinkle breaks down where history rhymes, where it doesn't, and the one signal we're watching.

Nvidia just announced a $150 billion increase to its share buyback program, bringing the remaining total to $235 billion, the largest buyback in history.

Nvidia can afford it, but it's an aggressive bet that today's AI windfall profits are the new normal. Corey Hinkle looks at three companies that spent big on buybacks during the good times: FICO, Nike and Lowe's, which even took on debt to buy back more stock during the housing boom.

Now that times are harder and their shares are cheaper, the buybacks have slowed or stopped. Will Nvidia regret it?

The AI rally keeps pushing to new highs, but underneath the bullish backdrop, some real warning signs are showing up.

Corey Hinkle walks through 7 of them: a fresh breakout in the 10-year Treasury yield, oil prices that won't come down, a US crude stockpile that will eventually need to be refilled, the share of S&P 500 stocks above their 200-day moving average falling from 75% to 47%, inflation creeping back up, credit spreads widening, and a question that could matter a lot for the AI trade: what if hallucinations never go away?

None of these guarantee a pullback, but none of them are bullish either. Are you bullish or bearish right now?

The 10-year Treasury is yielding 5.1% and the 30-year is near 5.4%, so why not lock in a guaranteed 5% for the next decade?

There are real reasons to think twice. 5% is roughly an average yield historically, not a bargain. If yields keep rising, the bond you just bought loses market value right away. And bonds don't give you capital appreciation, which is where wealth actually gets built.

Corey Hinkle goes back to the early 1980s, when the 10-year paid 13% and Warren Buffett was buying stocks anyway, to show why high yields have often been a better time to own stocks than bonds. Plus: the middle ground if you think rates are headed higher.

What 10-year yield would it take to get you to buy?
