08/25/2026
If you're self-employed, run a business, or earn income not taxed through a regular paycheck, your third quarter estimated tax payment for 2026 is due Tuesday, September 15.
The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBBA) created several new deductions that could impact your estimated tax payment this year. These include:
Tips - up to $25,000 of qualified tip income could be deductible
Overtime - up to $12,500 or $25,000 if you file jointly
Child tax credit - $2,200 per qualifying child under 17
Age 65 and older - an extra deduction of up to $6,000 per person
Income limits apply to several of these, and most are claimed on a new form called Schedule 1-A.
How to stay penalty-free
The IRS won't charge a penalty if you pay in at least 90% of what you will owe this year, or 100% of what you owed last year. If your income topped $150,000 last year, that second number rises to 110%.
