The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.2% last week, led by the Consumer Staples and Utilities sectors. The index is now up 2.1% for the month and 14% for the year. The only two sectors in the red were Industrials, down 0.4%, and Technology, down 0.3%.
The probability of the Federal Reserve leaving its target interest rate unchanged in October was 83% as of Friday afternoon. The market still sees a 71% likelihood of a 0.25% (25 basis points) rate hike in December, and assigns a 45% chance of another quarter-point increase in March to help pull inflation back down toward the Fed's 2% target.
Even though Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day is a Federal holiday, it is not an official holiday for major stock exchanges. However, keep in mind that the U.S. bond market and banks are closed on Monday. That means if you hold a Charles Schwab brokerage account and keep all your cash in the SWVXX money market fund, you will not be able to sell shares of your money market fund to cover cash purchases on Monday. Unless you already have uninvested cash sitting in your account, I suggest selling a losing stock position to cover any purchases you make on Monday.
The third-quarter (Q3) earnings season kicks off on Tuesday. Several major financial institutions are scheduled to report quarterly results, including JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs Group (GS), Wells Fargo (WFC), Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC), Morgan Stanley (MS), BlackRock (BLK), and Charles Schwab (SCHW). Other major companies reporting next week include Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and UnitedHealth (UNH). Keep in mind that stocks tend to move higher overall during earnings season.
To top it off, we also get the latest inflation data this week: the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Wednesday and the Producer Price Index (PPI) report on Thursday.
