There are some financial decisions you can revisit in January.

Others close with the calendar.

That makes the end of the year a good time to look at what still needs attention.

• Are you getting the full retirement match available to you?

• Did this year create gains or losses worth reviewing?

• If you take RMDs, has the full amount come out?

This month, Ask Her is focusing on the year-end reminders that matter at different stages of your financial life.

A few minutes now could save you from discovering something in January that would have been easier to fix in December.

Stocks finished the third quarter mixed. The S&P 500 gained 2.03%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.47%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 2.70%. Halloween is next on the calendar, with U.S. consumers expected to spend \$13.5 billion USD this year and 6.26 million Canadian children in their trick-or-treating years.

Quarterly Market Insights | October 2026 U.S. and Canadian Markets Stocks were mixed in the third quarter as economic, geopolitical, and corporate earnings news pushed the broad market higher while weighing on the Dow Industrials. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index gained 2.03 percent, while the Nasd...

The U.S. dollar has strengthened significantly over the past year, supported by higher real interest rates and its role as a safe haven during periods of uncertainty.

A stronger dollar can benefit consumers and lower the cost of imports, but it can also create headwinds for U.S. exporters and international investments.

For long term investors, currency movements are another reminder of the value of diversification. Holding a balanced mix of domestic and international assets can help investors navigate shifts in currencies, interest rates, and global economic conditions.

The dollar can move quickly.
A balanced portfolio can provide perspective.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We take this time to honor the strength of those who have faced a diagnosis, support those currently going through it, and recognize the families and communities who stand beside them.

Awareness matters. Support matters. Presence matters.

We stand with you.

A rollover decision can change when you are able to use your retirement money.

If you separate from service during or after the calendar year you turn 55, withdrawals from that employer’s 401(k) may qualify for an exception to the 10% additional tax on early distributions. Ordinary income tax can still apply, and the plan must permit the withdrawal.

That age-55 exception generally does not follow the money into an IRA.

An IRA may offer advantages of its own. The decision should be measured against the income you may need before age 59½, not treated as automatic paperwork after retirement.

Ask Her walks through access, rollovers, Roth rules, RMDs, employer stock, and beneficiary planning. Before moving the account, know which options the move would preserve and which it would close.

The Federal Reserve’s latest rate hike reflects a familiar challenge: monetary policy can respond to inflation, but it cannot directly address the underlying forces driving it.

With higher oil prices contributing to persistent inflation, the Fed raised rates by 0.25% in September. For investors, the bigger takeaway is that Fed decisions are only one part of a much broader economic and market environment.

History shows that markets have continued to grow through countless rate changes, economic shocks, and periods of uncertainty. Staying focused on long-term goals and maintaining a balanced portfolio can be more important than reacting to each Fed decision.
