Here's what usually happens next. You tell yourself you'll deal with it in January. January turns into April. And the one thing that keeps growing in the meantime is the interest on unpaid tax, which has been accruing since April 15, extension or no extension.
What actually helps:
1. Find out which years are missing. Not all of them, usually — people are often further along than they think.
2. Find out whether you qualify for the IRS's streamlined procedures for taxpayers living outside the US. They ask for the most recent 3 years of returns and 6 years of FBARs, and they're built for people whose failure to file was non-willful — negligence, a mistake, or a good faith misunderstanding of the rules.
3. Get both sides looked at together. Your Spanish IRPF and your US return should tell the same story.
We put all of that in one guide — written for Americans in Spain, by a CPA who has spent 31 years on Spain–US cases. No cost, nothing to fill in.
Comment TAX and it lands in your DMs.
