Busy doesn’t always mean you’re profitable.

You can have:
• A phone that never stops ringing
• A calendar that’s completely booked
• Customers constantly swiping their cards
• Orders coming in nonstop

…and still not be making as much money as you think.

Sometimes the problem isn’t getting more customers…

It’s pricing, expenses, overhead, inefficient processes, and not knowing where the money is actually going.

We can help you with that!

Do you know how to read your tax return?

Many business owners know whether they got a refund or had to pay taxes…

But do you know what your tax return actually says about your business? Your tax return can provide valuable information about:

• Your business income
• Your deductible expenses
• Your taxable profit
• How much you paid in taxes
• Changes from previous years
• Areas that may deserve a closer look

Your tax return shouldn't just be a document you sign and file away. It can be a valuable tool for making better business decisions.

If you don't understand what your tax return is telling you, that's something worth discussing with us.

It’s not always the big expenses that hurt a business. Sometimes it’s the small recurring costs that quietly add up month after month.

Think about:

• Subscriptions you no longer use
• Software licenses for employees who don’t need them anymore
• Daily office purchases that seem insignificant
• Unused memberships or service plans
• Bank fees and payment processing charges
• Advertising that isn’t producing results
• Duplicate tools that do the same job
• Maintenance contracts for equipment you rarely use
• Late fees, interest, and avoidable penalties
• Paying for services or features your business has outgrown

One $20 expense may not seem like much.
But 10 unnecessary $20 expenses every month is $2,400 a year.

And that’s just one example.

The key is to regularly review your recurring expenses and ask…

“Are we still getting enough value from this?”

How do business owners pay themselves?

Business owners can take money out of their business in different ways, but the method matters.

Depending on how your business is structured, you may receive money through:

• Owner’s Draw: Common for sole proprietors and partnerships. Money is taken from the business for personal use.

• Wages or Salary: Common for S corporation owners who work in the business. Compensation generally needs to be handled through payroll.

• Distributions: Certain business owners, including S corporation shareholders, may receive distributions in addition to wages.

• Guaranteed Payments: A payment arrangement used by some partnerships for services or capital.

Why does the method matter?

The way you pay yourself can affect payroll taxes, income taxes, bookkeeping, and how much money you can take home. It’s important to understand the rules for your specific business structure.

Not sure which method applies to your business? We can help you understand your options and make informed decisions.

Your bank account doesn’t tell the whole story!

One of the biggest things business owners need to understand is that profit and cash are not the same thing.

Profit is what your business has left after subtracting expenses from income.

Cash in the bank is the money you actually have available to spend right now.

So…how can your business show a profit but have less cash in the bank?

• You may have purchased equipment or inventory.
• You may have paid down a loan.
• You may have outstanding invoices that haven't been collected yet.
• You may have made tax payments or other large cash payments.

Regularly reviewing both your profit AND your cash flow can help you make better business decisions and prepare for upcoming expenses and taxes.

Are You Ready for the 4th Quarter?

Get organized before the end of the year by doing the following:

• Review year-to-date income and expenses
• Check estimated tax payments
• Gather missing receipts and records
• Review equipment or business purchases

We ask a lot of questions!

Why?

Because your tax return is more than a stack of numbers. It’s a picture of your business, your goals, and the decisions you’re making throughout the year.

• What changed in your business this year?

• Did you purchase equipment?

• Did you buy or sell property?

• Did your income change significantly?

• Did you hire employees or family members?

• Are you planning to expand?

• Is your current business structure still right for you?

• What are you planning for next year?

These questions can uncover opportunities, potential issues, and tax strategies that may otherwise be missed.

You shouldn’t feel like you’re just handing someone a pile of paperwork and getting a tax return back.

When your tax advisor knows your business, they can help you make more informed decisions throughout the year.

Today…we pause to remember September 11, 2001.

We honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, the families who were forever changed, and the countless heroes who stepped up in the days that followed.

May we never forget the courage, sacrifice, and unity that emerged from one of our nation's darkest days.

Remember. Honor. Never Forget. 🇺🇸

What can a tax advisor do for a professional rodeo athlete?

Let’s say you make $100,000 during the year from winnings, endorsements, and other rodeo related income.

But you also have expenses like:

• Horse expenses
• Fuel & travel
• Hotels
• Entry fees
• Horse hauling
• Equipment & tack
• Business expenses
• Advertising & sponsorship expenses

A tax advisor can help:

• Keep track of income and expenses throughout the year
• Know which expenses may qualify as business deductions
• Set aside money for taxes instead of being surprised at tax time
• Plan for large purchases and equipment
• Organize records for tax season
• Look at your overall tax strategy…not just what you owe

The biggest takeaway?

If you rodeo professionally…you are running a business. Having a tax professional who understands that business can help you spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time focusing on winning.
