Stocks finished the third quarter mixed. The S&P 500 gained 2.03%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.47%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 2.70%. Halloween is next on the calendar, with U.S. consumers expected to spend \$13.5 billion USD this year and 6.26 million Canadian children in their trick-or-treating years.

Stocks were mixed in the third quarter as economic, geopolitical, and corporate earnings news pushed the broad market higher while weighing on the Dow Industrials.

🎂 Japan just crossed a milestone: for the first time, more than 100,000 people there are age 100 or older.

According to the country's Health and Welfare Ministry, Japan now counts 107,677 centenarians, up nearly 8,000 from the year before. Almost 88 percent are women. The country's oldest resident, Kyoto's Fuyo Kishimoto, recently turned 114.

🎌 Officials point to progress in medical care, along with healthier lifestyles and diet, as part of what's driving the trend. And Japan isn't alone; life expectancies have been rising in many countries over the past several decades.

It's a good reminder of how many more years many of us may be around for, and why that's worth factoring into conversations about the road ahead, from healthcare to how a longer stretch of years gets supported financially.

That's exactly the kind of long-term thinking we like to talk through together.

🐻 Fat Bear Week is back, and the competition is looking VERY well-fed.

From September 22–29, fans can vote for their favorite brown bears at Katmai National Park and Preserve as they pack on the pounds before hibernation. 🐟

This year’s field includes 11 contenders, including reigning champion 32 Chunk, who’s back to defend his title after winning the 2025 crown. 👑

The bracket also features familiar faces like 128 Grazer, 856, 901, 909, and 910, along with several other salmon-fueled heavyweights hoping to become the internet’s next favorite bear.

Fans can watch the bears on Katmai’s live cams and vote through the single-elimination tournament until one gloriously chunky champion remains. 🏆

So, who gets your vote this year? 🐻❤️

Fraud poses a risk to all individuals, including those who exercise caution.
In addition to spoofing phone numbers to make it look like you're receiving a legitimate call, scammers can use AI to make the voice on the other end sound like a friend or family member.
🚫Do not respond to attempts to create panic.
🚫Do not share or confirm any personal or financial information.
🧐Independently verify the organization's contact information. Use phone numbers from official statements or bills.
💬Establish a code word with family members. If you receive a call from an individual claiming to be a relative, request the code word for verification.

An attack on U.S. soil. The loss of thousands of lives. In the wake of these horrific events, we might have recoiled. But the people of this nation rallied. And in the time that has followed, we've proven our strength, our courage, and our resilience.
Let us never forget the events of 9/11.

Dolly Parton’s legacy reaches far beyond music.

Over the years, she gave millions to causes ranging from disaster relief and medical research to education and children’s literacy. Her Imagination Library alone has distributed more than 330 million books to children across five countries.

Her example is a meaningful reminder that generosity doesn’t have to follow one formula. It starts with deciding what matters to you and finding a way to make an impact.

We spotlight the Imagination Library as a reminder that you can help children not only learn to read, but learn to love reading. Reach out to United Way of Suwannee Valley to find out how you can become a Reading Pal. The cost? Your time. Be the difference in your community.

Dolly Parton's death is shining a new light on the country music icon's philanthropy. The Library of Congress has called Parton a “titan of children’s literacy” for the millions of free books provided monthly through her Imagination Library.

Markets pushed higher in August as AI-driven optimism helped investors look past softer economic data. The S&P 500 gained 2.62% and the S&P/TSX Composite rose 2.96%, even as softening retail sales kept consumer spending in focus. Back-to-school season adds another data point to that story, with spending expected to reach \$146.8 billion in the U.S. and \$4.5 billion in Canada this year.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index advanced 2.62 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 3.93 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged, adding 1.34 percent. The S&P/TSX rose 2.96 percent.1,2
