💰 Could the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax affect you?

The Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) is reaching more taxpayers because its income thresholds haven’t changed since the tax took effect in 2013.

For 2026, you may be subject to the 3.8% NIIT if you have net investment income and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds:

• $200,000 for single filers
• $250,000 for married couples filing jointly
• $125,000 for married individuals filing separately

Net investment income can include taxable interest, dividends, and gains from stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

The good news? Strategic year-end tax planning may help reduce your MAGI or net investment income — and potentially lessen the impact of the NIIT.

💼 Thinking About Selling Your Business?

How you structure the sale can make a big difference when it comes to taxes.

An installment sale may allow you to receive the purchase price over time, spreading the taxable gain — and potentially the related tax — across several years.

Typically, the buyer makes a down payment and pays the remaining balance over time. Each payment may include:
• A tax-free return of your basis
• Taxable gain
• Interest, which is generally taxed as ordinary income

This type of arrangement can also help expand your pool of potential buyers or make it easier to negotiate a higher purchase price. However, there are important considerations, including depreciation recapture that may be taxable upfront and the risk of the buyer failing to make future payments.

💻 Does your business accept, spend, or invest in cryptocurrency?

If so, it’s important to understand the tax implications. The IRS continues to closely scrutinize digital-asset transactions, and business tax returns now include questions related to digital assets.

Cryptocurrency and other digital assets are generally treated as property for federal tax purposes, which means:

🔹 Crypto received for goods or services may be taxable income based on its fair market value when received.
🔹 Selling, exchanging, or spending crypto may result in a separate taxable gain or loss.
🔹 Crypto payments to employees and contractors are still subject to applicable tax-reporting requirements.
🔹 Brokers may be required to report certain digital-asset transactions on Form 1099-DA.

Digital-asset reporting can get complicated quickly. If your business had cryptocurrency activity during 2026, now is a good time to make sure your records and reporting are in order.

📞 Contact us at 337-232-3637 to review your 2026 digital-asset activity and reporting obligations.

💵 Payroll Mistakes Can Be Costly for Small Businesses

Managing payroll isn’t always simple, and even small errors can lead to penalties, interest, and unnecessary headaches.

Common payroll trouble spots include:
✔️ Incorrect tax withholding
✔️ Late payroll tax deposits
✔️ Failing to include taxable bonuses, awards, or fringe benefits in employee wages

And remember — mistakes can happen even when you use payroll software or an outside payroll provider.

Having a solid review process can help catch problems early, but when an error does happen, acting quickly is key.

📞 We’re here to help. Contact us at 337-232-3637 if you discover a payroll error or have questions about your payroll tax obligations.

🍎 Educators: Your Classroom Expenses Could Mean Tax Savings! ✏️📚

Teachers and other eligible educators often spend their own money to make sure their classrooms have everything they need. For 2026, there may be two ways to deduct qualifying unreimbursed expenses:

📌 Up to $350 deduction — Available whether or not you itemize deductions.

📌 New itemized deduction with no dollar cap — Educators who itemize may be able to deduct eligible expenses that exceed the $350 limit.

If you qualify for both, you may be able to take the $350 deduction first to help reduce your adjusted gross income, then claim eligible expenses above $350 as an itemized deduction.

Just remember: the same expense can’t be deducted twice.

🍎 From books and classroom supplies to certain equipment and other educational expenses, those out-of-pocket costs can add up!

Contact us at 337-232-3637 to find out if you qualify and which deductions may be available to you for 2026.

💼 Great Benefits Can Make a Big Difference!

Attracting and retaining skilled employees takes more than competitive pay. A strong benefits package can be just as important—and certain benefits may offer valuable tax advantages for both employers and employees.

Tax-free fringe benefits may include:

🔹 Health, disability, long-term care & life insurance
🔹 Dependent care assistance
🔹 Adoption assistance
🔹 Educational assistance
🔹 Certain transportation benefits

Plus, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made changes to several fringe-benefit tax rules for 2026 and beyond, making it a good time to review what your business currently offers.

📅 With open enrollment right around the corner for many businesses, now is the time to start planning your 2027 employee benefits package.

Contact us at 337-232-3637 to review your current benefits, understand the tax implications and identify opportunities to strengthen your package for the year ahead.

💰 Could Your 401(k) or IRA Balance Be Too Large?

It might sound like a good problem to have—but sometimes, maximizing tax-deferred retirement savings isn’t always the best tax strategy.

Traditional 401(k)s and IRAs offer valuable benefits:
✅ Contributions may be pretax or tax-deductible
✅ Your investments can grow tax-deferred
✅ Compounding can help build significant retirement savings

But there’s another side to consider. Withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts are generally taxed as ordinary income. If tax rates are higher when you retire, or if your withdrawals push you into a higher tax bracket, that large tax-deferred balance could come with a bigger tax bill than expected.

That’s why a well-rounded retirement strategy may include a mix of tax-deferred, Roth, and taxable investments.

📞 Planning ahead can give you more control over your taxes in retirement. Contact us at 337-232-3637 to discuss strategies that may help you build a more tax-efficient retirement plan.
