Interesting paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York relating to the transmission of tariffs from importers to consumer prices.

"The Total Effect: Higher Consumer Prices

To illustrate how the three results combine, we consider a scenario in which a 10 percent tariff is imposed on all imports. We estimate that in this case consumer goods prices would be 2.6 percent higher after twelve months, or about a quarter of the tariff increase. About two-thirds of this effect is direct, driven by higher prices of imported consumer goods. The remaining third is the indirect effect from U.S.-made goods, most of it from the marginal cost channel.

This consumer price increase does not arrive all at once. The direct effect of higher import prices comes through quickly: about half is in place after three months and all of it by six months, as retailers take a few months to pass on higher costs. In contrast, the indirect tariff effects from higher domestic producer prices take longer to appear. The size of the indirect effect on retail prices more than doubles between six and twelve months as U.S. producers raise their prices. The full effect on consumer prices is reached only after about a year."

A look at how much of U.S. tariffs reach consumers and how quickly, tracing tariffs through import, domestic producer, and retail prices.

This is a PSA. Social media is currently chock full of posts that misrepresent the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's GDPNow report. The posts are being used to push a political viewpoint because the GDPNow is suggesting US economic growth for the 3rd quarter could be over 5%. We saw the same volume of misleading reports in January of this year when similar 5% estimates were coming out of GDPNow

GDPNow is not a final number, it is a "now" cast not a "fore"cast. In fact, there are two sets of numbers in the nowcast. The estimate from GDPNow's model and a blue chip consensus estimate.

Why is this important to know? GDPNow changes every week. It can swing a good bit from week to week as new economic data is released.

Today is a great example. The report dropped from 5% to 3.7%.

Our advice is to take any GDPnow social media posts with a grain of salt. You can always look up the most recent estimate and/or sign up to receive a summary when updates are posted.

Jessie had a quick trip to Philadelphia for a due diligence meeting with the team at Clark Capital. It was a great opportunity to hear firsthand from the professionals making the trades and leading their teams, while gaining insight into their investment strategies, economic outlook, and internal initiatives. Lots of great conversations valuable takeaways from this meeting.

Fun fact: Clark’s office is on the 53rd and 54th floor of the building. There is no such thing as a “bad” view.
