Financial caregiving begins with understanding your responsibilities.

Helping manage a parent's finances involves more than paying bills, transferring money, or monitoring accounts. It requires understanding your legal authority, coordinating with others, and maintaining accurate records.

Before taking action, consider three important questions:

▪️ Authority: What financial decisions am I legally authorized to make?

▪️ Responsibility: Which accounts and financial matters fall within my role?

▪️ Coordination: Which family members and professional advisors should be involved?

If you serve under a power of attorney or as a trustee, you may have fiduciary responsibilities that require acting in accordance with applicable legal duties and maintaining appropriate records.

Good financial caregiving begins with preparation, communication, and accountability.

Save these questions for your next family financial conversation.

Trump Accounts are back in the news.

The U.S. Treasury plans to automatically establish Trump Accounts for more than 60 million children under age 18. Parents and guardians will still need to take steps to claim and use the accounts and, when eligible, receive the $1,000 federal contribution.

For families, including higher-income and high-net-worth families, the announcement raises a broader planning question: Where does a Trump Account fit within an overall strategy for supporting the next generation?

A Trump Account is one option. Depending on a family's goals, the larger conversation may include 529 plans, custodial accounts, trusts, direct gifts, retirement savings, charitable giving, and other strategies for transferring wealth across generations.

The important question is not simply which account is available. It is what you want your resources to accomplish, for whom, and when financial support could make the greatest difference.

That is where intergenerational giving becomes part of comprehensive family wealth planning.

A back-to-school staple, 5,000 years in the making.

As students head back to school, here’s a little history about something many of us have carried over the years — the backpack.

In the September/October issue of Smithsonian, Katya Cengel explores how centuries of innovation helped shape the modern backpack.

A few fascinating stops along the way:

• The oldest known backpack dates to around 3300 B.C.
• Civil War veteran Henry Clay Merriam patented an innovative canvas pack in 1878.
• Mountaineer Gerry Cunningham introduced zippered compartments in the 1930s, helping shape the modern backpack.

Fun fact: An estimated 450 million backpacks are sold worldwide each year, roughly the same number of iPods Apple sold during the iPod’s entire 20-year run.

More than 5,000 years later, the backpack is still adapting and still heading back to school.

Generational wealth is about more than building assets—it’s also about protecting them for the next generation.

Christine Parker recently shared her family’s experience with heirs’ property with The New York Times. Her story reminds us that estate planning includes not only having the right documents, but also making sure the people you trust know what you own and how your assets are titled. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/01/business/inheritance-real-estate-retirement.html?smid=url-share

Would your family know where to find the information they need if they had to step in tomorrow?

Real estate passed down without a clear title of ownership can prevent families from creating generational wealth.
