What happens to Social Security if the trust fund reserves are depleted?

It's one of the biggest questions retirees and future retirees are thinking about - and one that shouldn't simply be ignored when making a Social Security claiming decision.

As Adam and Ben discuss, potential changes to Social Security are another "domino" worth considering. The goal isn't to assume the worst. It's to understand the possibilities, consider how they could affect your retirement plan, and make decisions based on what matters most to you.

If we knew exactly how long we were going to live, deciding when to claim Social Security would be a whole lot easier.

The math often points toward delaying benefits if you can afford to wait, because living longer can mean receiving more in lifetime benefits. But real-life retirement planning isn't quite that simple. Your health, financial needs, spouse, survivor benefits, taxes, and overall retirement strategy can all play a role in the decision.

So the question isn't simply, "When should I claim Social Security?" It's, "What makes the most sense for my overall financial plan?"

Retirement planning means planning for more than one possible future.

Delaying Social Security may increase lifetime benefits if you live a long life - but what happens if your circumstances change unexpectedly? Your Social Security decision can affect how much you draw from your portfolio, what assets you preserve, and what happens financially if one spouse passes away earlier than expected.

That's why looking at multiple "what if" scenarios can be so important when deciding when to claim Social Security.

One of the hardest transitions in retirement isn't learning how to save.

It's learning how to spend.

If you've spent your entire career being disciplined, living below your means, and watching your accounts grow, suddenly being told “you have enough—go enjoy it” can feel incredibly uncomfortable.

But waiting forever to enjoy your money comes with its own risk.

What if you have the money later, but don't have the health, energy, or opportunity to do the things you've been postponing?

Your financial plan should help you prepare for tomorrow without sacrificing today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjRGeygjKeA

We spend decades being told to save more, invest more, and build more wealth.

But what happens when “more” becomes the goal instead of the tool?

Financial planning isn't just about maximizing wealth. It's about figuring out what your money is supposed to make possible in your life—whether that's more time, more experiences, more freedom, or more meaningful moments with the people you love.

At some point, the question has to change from “How much more can I accumulate?” to “How can this money serve my life?”

Even financial professionals need a second opinion.

Adam shares how he will sometimes turn to Ben when making decisions about his own finances because another perspective can reveal something he may not see himself.

That's one of the benefits of financial planning: not having someone who can predict the future, but having someone who can challenge your assumptions, ask better questions, and help you think through different outcomes.

If you've been making major financial decisions on your own, this episode is worth a listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=julFnINQTZs

One of the biggest financial risks isn't always making a bad decision. Sometimes it's being too confident that you've considered everything.

Adam and Ben discuss how overconfidence can lead people to overlook taxes, estate planning, insurance, longevity, market uncertainty, and other factors that can affect the outcome of a financial plan.

You don't have to predict the future. You need a plan that can adapt to it.

Confidence can be helpful when making financial decisions. But too much confidence can create blind spots.

In this episode of A/B Conversations, Adam and Ben explore how overconfidence can show up in investing and financial planning—from trying to time the market to assuming past success will continue.

The goal isn't to eliminate confidence. It's to make sure confidence doesn't prevent you from considering what could go wrong.
