Labor Day is not really about the last barbecue of summer.

It exists because people fought for it.

The eight hour day. The weekend. Child labor laws. Overtime pay. Workplace safety. None of that arrived because someone decided to be generous. Ordinary working people organized, and some of them paid a real price for it.

We inherited all of it and mostly stopped thinking about it. That is what happens with things that get won properly. They start to feel like weather.

But here is the thing worth sitting with today: the fight over what a working person gets to keep did not end. It just moved.

It moved into the tax code. Into which deductions exist and who gets told about them. Into whether the person doing your payroll set it up correctly. Into whether anyone ever explained to you that the timing of a decision in June determines what you owe in April.

Most people are not losing money because they earn too little. They are losing it because nobody showed them the rules.

Knowing the rules is not a privilege reserved for people with wealth managers. It should be ordinary.

That is the version of this holiday I think about. Not the barbecue. The idea that working people deserve what they earned, and deserve to understand how to keep it.

Enjoy your day off if you got one. 💛

Three days of IRS training in Orlando. Here is what I want every client to check before December.

A large portion of this year's program covered the new deductions now in effect. These are real, they are temporary, and a lot of people are going to miss them because nobody told them what to look for.

If you earn tips — you may deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips for 2025 through 2028. Only voluntary tips count. A mandatory service charge added to a large party does not.

If you work overtime — up to $12,500, or $25,000 filing jointly. Only the premium half of time and a half under FLSA rules, not your full overtime pay.

If you are 65 or older — an additional $6,000 deduction each, on top of the standard deduction and the existing one for age. $12,000 for a couple where both qualify.

All three phase out above $150,000 of income, $300,000 joint. And none of them make the money tax free in your paycheck. Withholding and F**A still apply. The benefit arrives when your return is filed.

Business owners, this next part is for you. Starting with 2026 wages, W-2s require new codes: TP for qualified tips, TT for qualified overtime, plus a tipped occupation code. Most payroll systems were never set up to separate qualified overtime from regular overtime. That data has to be captured during the year — you cannot rebuild it in January.

Two things worth doing this month:

✔️ If you have tipped or overtime staff, have someone verify your payroll configuration now
✔️ If you or a parent turned 65 recently, check whether that deduction was claimed

We did not sit through three days of sessions to keep it to oirselves. If any of the above applies to you, let's look at it before the year closes and it is too late to do anything about it. 💛

Mándaselo a tus padres.

No presiones ningún número.

The IRS spent real time this week teaching us how criminals are targeting you. Here is what you need to know.

We are wrapping up three days at the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum in Orlando, and two topics ran through the whole program: fraud and scams, and cybersecurity.

That tells you something. When the IRS builds its biggest annual training around it, it is because people are losing money.

Save this. Send it to your parents.

🚫 The IRS does not call you first. Initial contact comes by mail. If your phone rings and someone claims to be the IRS demanding immediate payment, it is a scam.

🚫 The IRS will never demand gift cards, wire transfers or crypto. Ever. Not once. If payment method sounds unusual, it is not the government.

🚫 The IRS will not threaten to send police to your door over an unpaid balance during a phone call.

🚫 The IRS does not text you or DM you on social media. Those links steal your identity.

🚫 They are impersonating tax preparers too. If you get an email that looks like it is from our office asking you to click something unexpected, call us at the number you already have before you touch it.

What to do instead: hang up. Do not press a number. Do not call back the number they gave you. Call your preparer or the IRS directly at a number you looked up yourself.

And here is the part that costs people the most: shame keeps them quiet. Scammers count on you being too embarrassed to tell anyone until the money is gone.

If something feels wrong, call us. No judgment, ever. We would rather take ten calls that turn out to be nothing than one after the fact.

Share this with someone who needs it. 💛

This is what most people never see when they hand over their tax documents. 💛

Yesterday was day one of the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum here in Orlando, and the Fail Safe Team was there.

Our team members Karla and Ernesto were in those rooms sitting through sessions on what changed this year and what is coming next.

I want to explain why that matters to you.

A lot of firms send one person to training. The owner goes, comes back, and everyone else keeps doing things the way they always have. Then a client calls with a payroll question, or asks what happened to a credit they used to get, and the answer is "let me check with someone."

That is not how we work. When Ernesto handles your payroll, he is working from the current rules, not last year's. When Karla answers your call, she actually knows what changed and why.

Because the rules did not change a little this year. They changed a lot. New W-2 reporting requirements. Credits that came, went, or moved. Thresholds that shifted. A family or a business owner can lose real money simply because nobody at their firm was paying attention.

Sitting in those sessions is not the exciting part of this profession. Nobody posts about continuing education. But it is the part that decides whether your return is right, and whether you keep what you are entitled to keep.

Proud of this team. More days ahead. 💛

El sueño Americano no está mu**to

Veinticinco empleados por hora. Seis meses.

No eran empresarios.

The dream isn't dead

Twenty five hourly employees. Six months. Nearly half a million dollars in savings and debt paid off.

Not entrepreneurs. Not high earners. Installers and service techs on regular paychecks, the same kind of paycheck a lot of you get every other Friday.

"In six months that group collectively saved $282,830 and paid off $210,905 in debt" (The Money Habit).

I keep thinking about that, because of what it disproves.

Everywhere you look right now someone is telling you the American Dream is finished. Nobody can buy a house. Nobody can take a vacation. Nobody can retire. And I understand why it feels that way.... prices are real, wages are real, and I am not going to insult you by pretending it is easy.

But those twenty five people bought homes. Took vacations. Started college funds. In the same economy you are living in.

What they had was not more money. It was a system.

Here is what they did not need:

❌ To be good at math
❌ To have perfect credit
❌ To have a high or even predictable income
❌ To understand personal finance
❌ Extraordinary willpower

What they had was a structure that moved their money before they could spend it, and made the good decision automatic instead of daily.

I bring this up because of something I see constantly in my office. Somebody comes in, I find $8,000 they were overpaying in taxes, and they are thrilled. Then a year later that $8,000 is gone and they cannot tell me where.

Finding the money is my job. Keeping it requires a system. And most people were never taught one, which is not their fault.

If you are working hard and still feel like you are running in place, it is very likely not a discipline problem. It is a structure problem. And structure can be built.

The dream is not dead. It just needs a plan. 💛
