Three Financial Statements. One Business Story.

Your Income Statement tells you if you’re making money.

Your Balance Sheet shows where your business stands financially.

Your Statement of Cash Flows helps explain where the cash went.

But here’s the important part:

Don’t review them separately. Connect the story.

📊 Are we profitable?
🏦 Are we financially healthy?
💵 Are we generating and managing cash effectively?

☕ Coffee Takeaway: Your financial reports should help you make decisions, not just tell you what already happened.

Your Income Statement says you made a profit.

But where is the cash? 👀💵

Your Statement of Cash Flows helps explain where cash came from, where it went, and why your bank balance changed.

It follows three areas:

💼 Operating activities
🏢 Investing activities
🏦 Financing activities

☕ Coffee Takeaway: A profitable business can still have cash-flow challenges.

Don’t just ask, Did we make money?
Ask, Where did the cash go?

Your business made a profit. Great! But is the business financially healthy?

Your Income Statement tells you how the business performed during a period of time.

Your Balance Sheet helps show where the business stands financially.

It shows your:

✔ Assets
✔ Liabilities
✔ Equity

But don’t just look at the totals.

Pay attention to what’s changing.

Is cash decreasing?
Are customers taking longer to pay?
Is debt increasing?
Are there unusual or negative balances?

Those changes can tell you something important about the business, even when the Income Statement shows a profit.

☕ Coffee Takeaway: Profitability matters, but it doesn't tell the entire story.

Understanding both your Income Statement and Balance Sheet gives you a much clearer view of your business.

Your Income Statement is more than a list of revenues and expenses.

It's one of the most valuable tools for understanding how your business is performing.

Each month, I encourage business owners to review:

✔ Revenue

✔ Gross Profit

✔ Operating Expenses

✔ Net Income

Then ask:

What story are these numbers telling me?

Understanding your Income Statement can help you make more confident decisions about growth, hiring, pricing, and future investments.

Great business decisions begin with understanding your numbers.

Hiring someone new can be one of the most exciting milestones in a business.

But before posting that job opening, ask yourself:

✔ Is my revenue consistently growing?

✔ Can I comfortably support another payroll?

✔ Have I considered the true cost of hiring beyond wages?

✔ Will this new employee help my business grow or improve efficiency?

Successful hiring starts long before the interview; it starts with understanding your numbers.

Hiring should give your business confidence, not financial stress.

Last week we discussed why financial forecasting is important.

Today, let's talk about what every business owner should actually forecast.

Here are five key areas to focus on:

✅ Sales
✅ Expenses
✅ Cash Flow
✅ Major Investments
✅ Forecast vs. Actual Results

Forecasting isn't about predicting the future.

It's about preparing for it.

When you regularly look ahead, you're more prepared to hire, invest, manage slower seasons, and make confident business decisions.

Every successful business starts by asking the right questions before making important financial decisions.

☕ Coffee Conversation

Which of these five areas do you review most often in your business?

Or which one would you like to understand better?

I'd love to continue the conversation!

This week's topic comes directly from a question I received after last week's post, and I loved the suggestion!

💬 Can we talk about forecasting and why it's important for cash flow planning?

Absolutely!

Think of a financial forecast like planning a road trip.

You wouldn't start driving without looking ahead to see where you're going.

The same is true in business.

Financial statements tell you where you've been.

A forecast helps you prepare for where you're going.

It can help answer questions like:

✔ Can I hire another employee?
✔ Is now the right time to expand?
✔ Will I have enough cash to cover upcoming expenses?
✔ Should I delay a large purchase?

Forecasting isn't about predicting the future perfectly.

It's about making better decisions with the information you have today.

Does your business use financial forecasting?

Or is this something you've always wanted to learn more about?

☕ Welcome to Carmen's Coffee & Finance!

Every week, I'll share one financial concept that every business owner should understand.

No accounting jargon.

Just practical conversations to help you make better business decisions.

Today's question: If my business is making a profit... why isn't there any cash in the bank?

Because profit and cash are not the same thing.

Your business can be profitable while waiting for customers to pay invoices, investing in equipment, purchasing inventory, or paying down debt.

That's why understanding your cash flow is just as important as understanding your Profit & Loss statement.

My hope is that this series helps business owners feel more confident about their numbers and the decisions they make every day.

Buying a commercial property is only the beginning.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is focusing entirely on the purchase while overlooking the accounting systems needed to manage the investment effectively.

Setting up the right financial foundation from day one can make future reporting, lender requests, tax preparation, and property management much more efficient.

That's why I created this simple 4-Step Accounting Implementation Guide.

Whether you're purchasing your first commercial property or expanding your portfolio, I hope you find it helpful.

If you'd like to talk about setting up the accounting structure for your next acquisition, I'm always happy to help.
