Employers: Are you ready for the new qualified overtime reporting requirements?

Beginning in 2026, employers must separately report qualified overtime compensation on Form W-2 using Box 12, Code TT. Only the FLSA-required overtime premium generally qualifies—not the employee’s entire overtime payment. Overtime wages also remain subject to federal income tax withholding.

Now is the time to review employee classifications, overtime practices, and payroll systems. Call Marr at (816) 363-8700 for help preparing for the new requirements.

💼📋 Business Owners: Important Changes to 1099 Reporting for 2026!

If your business pays independent contractors or other vendors, there's a tax reporting change you need to know about!

Beginning with payments made in 2026, the IRS reporting threshold for many Form 1099 payments has increased from $600 to $2,000.

✅ What does this mean for your business?

You may have fewer 1099 forms to prepare and issue this year!

The new threshold generally applies to:
🔹 Form 1099-NEC – Payments to independent contractors and other nonemployees.
🔹 Form 1099-MISC – Rent and certain other reportable business payments.
🔹 Backup Withholding – The $2,000 threshold also applies to certain related requirements.

📅 Don't wait until tax season! As the end of 2026 approaches, now is a great time to review your vendor payments, verify your records, and make sure you're prepared for the upcoming filing deadlines.

At Marr & Company CPAs, we help businesses stay informed, organized, and compliant with changing tax regulations.

📞 Call us at (816) 363-8700 to discuss how these changes may affect your business.

⚠️ Cryptocurrency holders: Be alert for a new IRS impersonation scam.

Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters directing recipients to a bogus “Digital Asset Compliance Portal.” The letters include a QR code leading to a fraudulent website designed to resemble the official IRS website! The site may request personal information, cryptocurrency wallet details, or exchange account credentials.

If you receive one of these letters:

• Don’t scan the QR code
• Don’t provide personal or account information
• Don’t respond to the sender
• Report the suspicious communication to the IRS

Have questions about an IRS notice or digital asset reporting? Contact Marr & Company CPAs. We’re here to help you determine what’s legitimate and protect your information.

💰 Want Your Wealth to Benefit Your Grandchildren—and Maybe Their Children, Too?

Passing assets to future generations can be a meaningful part of your legacy, but for larger estates, it can also come with important tax considerations.

The Generation-Skipping Transfer (GST) tax generally applies to transfers made to people two or more generations below you, such as grandchildren. The tax rate is generally 40% and can apply in addition to gift or estate taxes.

The good news? For 2026, individuals have a $15 million GST tax exemption, so most families won’t be affected.

For larger estates, however, strategic planning may provide opportunities. Allocating the GST exemption to a dynasty trust, for example, may allow assets to benefit multiple generations while reducing future transfer-tax exposure.

When you’re planning for generations—not just years—the right tax strategy matters.
