December is NOT the time to start thinking about your taxes.

By then, the year is almost over—and some of your best planning opportunities may already be behind you.

The earlier you look at your numbers, the more time you have to:
✔️ Plan for your tax liability
✔️ Make strategic business decisions
✔️ Manage your cash flow
✔️ Identify potential tax-saving opportunities
✔️ Avoid last-minute surprises

Tax planning is about making decisions before the year ends—not just filing after it does.

If you haven’t started your year-end tax planning yet, now is a good time.

Your future self (and your bank account) will thank you.

Before you make your next big business move, check your numbers.

Hiring someone? Buying equipment? Expanding? Taking on debt?

Your gut might say “go for it.” Your numbers might tell you something completely different.

Knowing your numbers before making big decisions = a major business cheat code.

Waiting until tax season to talk to your accountant?

That’s a little like waiting until the game is over to check the score.

Tax planning works best before the deadline—not when everything is already due.

A quick conversation throughout the year can help you:
✔️ Plan ahead
✔️ Make smarter financial decisions
✔️ Avoid last-minute surprises
✔️ Know what to expect at tax time

Your accountant shouldn’t just hear from you when it’s time to file.

Don’t wait for tax season to start the conversation.

A big revenue number can sound impressive, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. The more useful question is what that revenue actually means for the health of the business.

Q4 moves quickly.

Before you get pulled into year-end deadlines, take a little time to understand where your business stands.

1. Your Profitability

Look beyond revenue.

Are your margins improving, staying consistent, or getting smaller?

If sales are up but profit isn't, it's worth understanding why before the year ends.

2. Your Cash Flow

How much cash do you actually have available after upcoming obligations?

Look at payroll, taxes, vendor bills, debt payments, and other major expenses coming up.

Cash in the bank isn't the same as cash available to spend.

3. Your Year-End Tax Position

Don't wait until tax season to find out where you stand.

Review your year-to-date income and expenses and identify any major purchases, changes, or decisions that may affect your year-end tax position.

You don't need a complicated financial review to get started.

These three areas can give you a much clearer picture of where your business is heading into Q4.

Know where you stand before the year starts moving faster.

More clients.
A new contract.
A new service.
A partnership.

At first glance, an opportunity can look like an obvious yes.

But not every opportunity is a profitable one.

Before you commit, ask:

1. Do we have the capacity?

Can your team actually handle the additional work?

Consider your current workload, staffing, time, and resources.

If taking on more work means stretching your team too thin, the opportunity may come with a cost that isn't obvious at first.

2. Is it profitable?

More revenue doesn't automatically mean more profit.

Look at the time, labor, materials, overhead, and other costs required to deliver the work.

What will you actually keep?

3. What's the cash impact?

When will you get paid—and when will you have to spend the money?

A profitable opportunity can still create cash flow pressure if expenses come before the revenue comes in.

Before saying yes, look at the whole picture.

The right opportunity isn't just one that brings in more revenue. It's one that makes sense for your capacity, profitability, and cash flow.

What if growing your business is actually making your life harder?

Growth looks good on paper, but bigger doesn’t always mean better. The real question is whether your business is creating more value without taking more from you.
