"Should we spend more on travel now or focus more on saving for our future?"

My response, "What if you could do both?"

Finances are all about balance. You can't only live in the present and neglect the future. On the flip side, you shouldn't delay the present day joys of life to solely focus on your retirement.

A solid financial strategy doesn't restrict your freedom, it creates it.

Create a plan for both and it doesn't have to be an either/or scenario!

A common mistake is assuming that retirement spending is a straight, predictable line. In reality, it looks a lot more like a smile. Behavioral finance shows us that retirement spending typically happens in three distinct phases.

1. The "Go-Go" Years - Traveling the world, picking up new hobbies & spoiling the grandkids. Spending is peaking here while your health and energy is at its best.

2. The "Slow-Go" Years - Life slows down as you travel less, stay closer to home, and spend time doing less expensive activities.

3. The "No-Go" Years - Mobility tends to decrease and lifestyle spending drops. Healthcare and potential living assistance costs rise spiking back up the "retirement smile."

A successful retirement needs a plan for not only how much you will spend but also when you will spend it.

One of my favorite clients, Mikaela, stopped by this morning for her review. I’ve been showing her the way for 30 years and I don’t see a reason to stop anytime soon!

You don’t want all of your money sitting in a pre-tax 401k when you retire.

You want options and flexibility.

Knowing how to save across tax-deferred, tax-free and taxable accounts is important.

Do you know the differences and how to use the buckets effectively for retirement income?

Investing can be hard. Timing the market is even harder.

In 2025, the S&P 500 calendar year return was 17.88%.

If you missed the best day of the year your return was reduced by more than half.

If you missed the two best days of the year your return was 76% less.

If you missed the three best days of the year your return was 91% less.

The stock market rewards the patient and punishes the impatient.

Focus on time in the market versus timing the market!

Filing for Social Security isn’t black and white. The details could mean extra dollars left on the table!

Married clients with a six year age gap. She had reached social security age first and started her benefit at 62. Ten years later her husband started his social security benefit at 66. He's now 70 and in my first meeting with them we went through their social security benefit amounts. Seems tedious but it matters.

Why? Well, by reviewing these details we brought to their attention that they are missing out on $502 a month by not filing her benefit on his record. They could have done it four years ago but the next best time was now.

He called me yesterday and expressed his gratitude for our work in digging in the details. It was a BIG win for them!

$6,000 a year, on top of six months of back pay, for a 20 minute phone call with Social Security. No brainer!

The details matter. Having another set of eyes working on your behalf can uncover your blind spots.

You don't know what you don't know and that's okay.

We had the opportunity to help a dear client who has spent the last 30+ years in public schools.

She thought she had her pension elections squared away and she had even met with the pension system.

In her annual review we decided to give it one more look under the hood just to make sure.

We were able to show her that by purchasing just a little bit of service time it would increase her monthly benefit by more than $500 a month. It was a no-brainer.

It was an option that often flies under the radar, but in her case, it changed the math completely.

$6,000 more every single year in permanent, guaranteed income, simply because we knew to dig into the details.

This is the true value of working with an advisor.

I caved and tried the new Chick-fil-A chicken and waffles.

Honestly, It was pretty good. Would I get it again? Probably not.

This will shock you but it reminds me of investing.

Whether it's a limited-time fast-food drop or the hottest new tech IPO, the excitement pulls us in.

When the novelty wears off, you usually come back to the same realization ... you can't beat the tried and true.

The classic, original chicken sandwich has been a reliable staple for decades because it consistently delivers.

When choosing your investments, it's the basic and boring that will also consistently deliver for you.

Life is too short to not give the waffle sandwich a try but build your wealth on the classics!

When it comes to Social Security, patience literally pays.

Start at 62? You take a 30% pay cut for life.
Wait until 70? You get a 24% bonus for life.

Every strategy is unique but understanding the rules of the game is the first step to winning it.

Don’t make a permanent decision without a comprehensive plan!
