A good amount of nurses I work with have student loans. Some nurses feel as if they can’t make any financial movies until their loans are paid, some want to keep deferring their loans and ignore them as much as possible. I definitely understand the stress and worry it can cause, but just having 1 serious sit down to figure out all your options and see what type of life you want for yourself can really help you figure out your best route. That route can consist of paying them off completely, qualifying for a program, or just making minimum payments.

You won’t know the true opportunity cost until you really take a step back and figure out what scenario gives you the most control over your loans and your future, not just going based on how your loans make you feel.

If you base any questions around student loans or may know other things regarding programs put them in the comments for other nurses to know!

This system or managing cashflow in general is nothing new yet it’s still overlooked. All nurses know going on a travel contact can be a great opportunity. That’s why I think a good system like this is smart to implement while on contract to make the most of the opportunity.

The exact percentages can be different depending on the persons lifestyle, but an overall framework between fixed expenses, funding your goals, and living life is what your plan should be built around.

You especially want to take advantage since you may not be on contract all year round and want to have additional funds for when you’re back at your regular pay.

If you’re doing something different that works drop it in the comments! If you need a system or someone to help best positions the dollars to can you toward your goals, reach it or comment “plan”. Let’s finishing the year strong!💪

Almost every person I have a meeting with, especially those with a lot of student loans, struggle to choose between paying off debt or investing. Well what if there’s a way where you can do both? This is something worth looking into.

If you are someone who decided that it makes more sense to pay off your student loans first, definitely see if your employer offers this so you can still have money being put away for retirement and you don’t feel behind!

This is one of the most overlooked areas of financial planning because no one wants to pay for it or talk about it until it’s too late. A lot of the RNs / APRNs I work with know they have this benefit at work, but few know how it really works. It’s just a benefit, not a full plan and can really set you back financially if not set up.

This doesn’t need to be something to constantly worry about but it’s also not something to completely skip over. If you haven’t already, just sit down and really ask yourself:

“Do I have a game plan to support myself / my family if I were to go out of work for an extended period of time?”

If you can answer that, you’re good to go and I’m very happy for you! If not, let’s get something going for you so you can learn the smart way, not the hard way! Hope this is entertaining and helpful!

Something I see almost everyday is nurses letting me know they have an old retirement account from a previous hospital or private group. A lot of times life gets busy and people forget about them or just don’t know their options.

Out of the 4 options, taking the money straight out will hurt the most due to the taxes and penalty. Can take up to 25%+ of the balance so only do this if the money is absolutely needed.

Leaving it there isn’t terrible but since you can’t contribute to it or have anyone managing it to update the portfolio, doesn’t make it a strong option.

The best 2 options would be rolling it over to your new employer or consolidating to your own IRA.

Rolling your your new employer makes sense if it’s a good plan that allows it, has low fees, you want simplicity, are a high earner with backdoor Roth considerations

IRA / Roth IRA makes sense if you want more investment choices, more control, and a central account for old plans if you change jobs frequently. As a reminder, pre tax dollars go into an IRA, post tax dollars go into a Roth IRA. That’s how you avoid the taxes and penalty.

Before immediately doing something, weigh out the options and see what makes the most sense! If this is something you have going on, feel free to reach out and my team and I can help find your previous retirement plan and help you understand what’s best for you!
