Twenty-five years ago today.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001 — and the first responders who ran toward the danger when everyone else was running away.

We remember Flight 93, and the passengers who made their stand over a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Our office is observing the day quietly. 🇺🇸

Labor Day began as a tribute to working people.

That’s exactly who our clients are — business owners meeting payroll, contractors on job sites, professionals putting in long weeks, and families making it all work.

Thank you for letting us handle the tax side while you do the rest.

Two quick notes: our office is closed Monday, September 7, and we’re back Tuesday the 8th. And Q3 estimated tax payments are due Tuesday, September 15 — if your income this year has looked different from last year, it’s worth checking that number before the payment goes out.

Enjoy the long weekend.

The IRS set the 2026 IRA numbers, and they're worth a look before you fund anything this year.

The basics:
▪️ Traditional and Roth IRAs: $7,500, or $8,600 if you're 50 or older (combined limit across both)
▪️ SEP IRA for the self-employed: up to $72,000
▪️ Roth income phase-outs: $153,000–$168,000 single, $242,000–$252,000 married filing jointly
▪️ Backdoor Roth: available at any income, no phase-out

A few things that trip people up every filing season:

Making a nondeductible traditional IRA contribution and skipping Form 8606. The IRS then has no record of your basis — which can mean paying tax twice on the same dollars.

Running a backdoor Roth while holding a pre-tax SEP or traditional IRA balance. The pro-rata rule treats all of them as one pot on December 31, and a big chunk of what should have been a tax-free conversion becomes taxable income.

And the deadline confusion: you have until April 2027 to make 2026 contributions, but Roth conversions must be done by December 31, 2026. Those two clocks run differently.

I wrote up the whole thing — all four strategies, the 2026 limits and phase-outs, the step-by-step backdoor sequence, and when a solo 401(k) beats a SEP.

Big news from the IRS: penalty relief is going automatic. 🎉

Starting this summer, the new Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP) prevents failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties — plus failure-to-deposit penalties for businesses — before they're ever assessed. No request, no letter, no phone call.

Who qualifies:
✅ Clean compliance history — 3 years (or 12 consecutive quarters for quarterly filers)
✅ Eligible 2025 returns and 2026 quarterly returns
✅ 1040, 1065, 1120, and payroll (94x) series

One catch: the old First-Time Abatement is being phased out through summer 2026, so some qualifying taxpayers will still get "late" notices. If one lands in your mailbox, don't panic — and don't pay it before talking to us. Relief may still be available.

The IRS just raised the standard mileage rate mid-year — something it hasn't done since 2022. 🚗

Effective July 1, 2026 (yes, retroactive):
✅ Business: 76¢/mile (up from 72.5¢)
✅ Medical & moving: 23.5¢/mile
✅ Charitable: unchanged at 14¢

If you reimburse employees or deduct business miles, update your rates and keep your logs current — the second half of 2026 uses the new number, even for trips you already took this month.

That envelope from the IRS just showed up. Now what?

Don’t panic — and definitely don’t ignore it. Most notices are routine, but every one has a deadline, and the IRS is wrong more often than you’d think.

We put together a free step-by-step guide: how to verify the letter is real, what the notice codes actually mean, and what to do (and NOT do) before you respond or pay a dime.

The S-Corp election deadline sneaks up fast. To have your election apply this year, Form 2553 generally must be filed within 2 months and 15 days of the start of your tax year — that’s March 15 for most calendar-year businesses — and every shareholder has to sign. Thinking about electing S-Corp status? Don’t wait until spring. Our new guide walks through the timing and what you need to file.
