We're proud to share that Jim Neshewat, Principal and Fiduciary Advisor, received the Jim Bennick Award at the 2026 J.W. Cole Symposium- Build Better.

This award isn't about business results. It recognizes someone who makes a real impact in their community: someone who gives back, supports local causes, and invests in the people around them. Above all, it honors someone who does the right thing, whether or not anyone is watching.

Anyone who knows Jim knows why this fits.

Congratulations, Jim, and thank you to the J.W. Cole team for this recognition.

AI comes up in almost every conversation about the future of financial services. At this year's J.W. Cole Symposium- Build Better, Jim Neshewat, principal and fiduciary advisor, joined a panel on what that future could mean for advisors, practice owners and the people they serve.

Our view is that technology can support the work behind the scenes. It doesn't replace judgment, context, or a relationship built over time. Financial decisions are personal, and the questions behind them deserve someone who listens.

Thank you to Jon Sheehan, JJ Vinas, and Zachary Daulton of J.W. Cole for inviting Jim to the Advisor Panel on Integrating Artificial Intelligence, and to fellow panelists Randy Nakamura and Rey Descalso for a thoughtful discussion.

The St. Johns Asset Management team recently attended the 2026 J.W. Cole Symposium- Build Better in Chicago.

Events like this give us time away from the day-to-day to connect with peers and other experts across the industry. We get to hear how other advisors are thinking about the questions our clients bring us, from retirement income to working alongside CPAs and estate attorneys.

We came home with plenty of notes. Over the coming weeks we'll decide which ideas belong in our own practice. Each one gets the same test: does it help our clients see their financial picture more clearly?

Thank you to J. W. Cole Financial, Inc. for bringing everyone together.

Q4 is the last window to make financial moves that affect this year's tax picture.
A few things worth thinking through before December 31:
Retirement contributions. If you haven't maxed out your 401(k), IRA, or other retirement accounts for the year, now is the time to check where you stand. Contributions made before year-end reduce taxable income for this year.

Capital gains and losses. If you have investments that are down, harvesting those losses before year-end can offset gains elsewhere in your portfolio. This is a coordination conversation between your financial advisor and your CPA.
Charitable giving. If you plan to give to charity this year, the timing and structure of how you give can affect your tax picture. Donor-advised funds are worth understanding if you give regularly.

RMDs. If you're required to take a required minimum distribution this year and haven't done so yet, the deadline is December 31.

None of this is tax advice — these are planning reminders. The right moves for your specific situation should be worked through with your advisor and your CPA together.

Most people choose a financial advisor the same way they choose a dentist — someone recommended them, the office was nearby, or they just needed one and the first one seemed fine.

That works until it doesn't.

A few questions worth asking before you commit to working with anyone:
Are you a fiduciary? The standard you operate under determines whether your advice has to be in my best interest — or just suitable. Those are meaningfully different.

How are you compensated? Understanding whether your advisor earns commissions on products they recommend helps you understand what might influence that recommendation.

Who do you typically work with? An advisor whose clients look like you will understand your situation better than one who doesn't.

What does the ongoing relationship look like? Financial planning isn't a one-time event. Knowing how engaged your advisor stays over time matters as much as anything.

These aren't trick questions. A good advisor will welcome them.

Most people assume they need a financial plan. Fewer people are sure what one actually includes.

It's not a portfolio. It's not a retirement account. It's not an investment strategy, though it probably includes one.

A financial plan is a coordinated picture of where you are, where you want to go, and what needs to happen between now and then. It covers income and spending, debt and savings, investments, tax-aware strategy, estate considerations, protection — and how all of those interact with each other.

The goal isn't a document. The goal is clarity. An honest picture of your financial life that makes it easier to make decisions, catch problems early, and build toward something specific.

If you've worked with a financial advisor but never felt like you had that kind of clarity, it might be worth asking what's missing.

There's a well-known pattern in how wealth moves through families. The first generation builds it. The second generation manages it. By the third generation, it's largely gone.

It's common enough that it has a name. And it doesn't happen because families don't care — it happens because the planning that protected the wealth in the first generation was never fully communicated or structured to outlast it.
What does it actually take to build a financial legacy that holds? We wrote about it on the blog.

The financial life of a physician looks different from almost anyone else's.

Years of training with minimal savings opportunity. Student debt that shaped early financial decisions. A compressed peak earning window. A compensation structure — whether through a practice or a health system — that has specific planning implications most generalist advisors haven't seen before.

By the time most physicians are in a position to think seriously about their financial picture, they're already behind the runway they need. Not because of bad decisions — because the career itself doesn't leave room for it.

The catch-up is possible. But it requires a clear picture of where you actually are, what your options look like, and a plan that accounts for the specific way medical careers accumulate — and transition.

If you're a physician in Northeast Florida and you haven't had that conversation yet, we'd welcome it.

The retirement rules changed — and most people haven't adjusted their strategy to match

SECURE Act 2.0 introduced some of the most significant updates to retirement planning in years. Some of them are straightforward. A few are genuinely easy to miss — and missing them could mean leaving real money on the table.
We broke down what you need to know on the blog. If you're within fifteen years of retirement or currently contributing to a workplace plan, it's worth a few minutes.

We're three-quarters of the way through 2026. A few things worth checking before the year closes out:

Has anything changed in your life this year that your financial plan doesn't reflect yet? A new job, a marriage, a divorce, the birth of a child, the death of a parent — any of these can affect everything from your beneficiary designations to your tax picture to your estate documents.

Are your retirement contributions on pace?

Have you had a real conversation about next year? Not market predictions — but what you want your financial life to look like in 2027 and what you need to do between now and December 31 to set that up.

If any of these feel overdue, September is a better time than December.
